Trisphee Coding Contest!

Welcome, welcome.

As we brainstormed contests for this event, we realized that we wanted to have a few different contests. We realized that very few events had ever had a coding contest, so we thought we'd give those who have some coding experience a chance to win some prizes. All you need to do is:

Find out what the code outputs at the end. When you think you have the answer, please send me a PM. When people solve this first one, more codes can be released!

As for prizes, those who answer correctly will receive:
  • 1st Place - 40 Runes, 7,000 Aurum
  • 2nd Place - 20 Runes, 5,000 Aurum
  • 3rd Place - 3,000 Aurum

Panda 04-16-2011 12:28 AM

Good luck to everyone who enter this contest. :]

Espy 04-16-2011 12:57 AM

-confuzzled but completely determined- I think Funkduder might have a better chance than me, though.

Duchess 04-16-2011 01:10 AM

My bf is trying to explain this language to me....

I totally fail... hard >.<''

GOOD LUCK Y'ALL

Coda 04-16-2011 12:43 PM

Don't let the fact that it's code scare you off! And if you don't know PHP, don't be afraid of that either! All this takes is problem solving, patience, and the ability to follow instructions.

If you have questions about anything -- about what various bits of syntax do, for instance -- please ask.

Duchess 04-17-2011 08:23 AM

@___@ I just attempted this... My result makes not much sense. Is the output supposed to be clever or just...output

It's code, so I don't think it's supposed to be clever. If you PM me your answer, I can tell you if you're right or at least on the right track. *nods*

Coda 04-17-2011 07:04 PM

It's just output. It doesn't actually mean anything. It's supposed to be hard to guess without actually following what it's trying to do. :P

Duchess 04-17-2011 07:15 PM

Yeh.. I sent it in and it turned out to be right! Go me!

Seems like all languages are similar in some way

Coda 04-17-2011 07:36 PM

They really are! Once you've gotten good at one programming language you can usually pick up others pretty easily.

Sage 04-17-2011 07:46 PM

I'm working on this! Hopefully I'm not too far off track.

Serra Britt 04-17-2011 09:50 PM

I look and look and I'm just totally lost >< It's sad because it's not like I've never used programming languages before...I just don't think I understand the variables at all :/

Coda 04-17-2011 09:57 PM

Well, I intentionally used one-letter variable names just to obscure the meaning of the code.

I AM pulling a nasty trick with the string indexing. (That's what the $x[y] syntax is -- the y'th character in the string $x.)

Duchess 04-17-2011 10:03 PM

I AGREE! That was nasty >_>

I thought I was doing something wrong at that part.....

Espy 04-18-2011 12:44 PM

-annoyed at the "$"- I'm...working on it...
Not even completely sure what language this is in...

Lucid: 04-18-2011 12:56 PM

it's in PHP.

Espy 04-18-2011 01:30 PM

-stares at it for a really long time-

Similar to Java?

Lucid: 04-18-2011 01:42 PM

I couldn't say. all programming languages do have similarities. I know a little bit of Java but I would have to look up a lot of PHP stuff to make heads or tails of this one. mostly syntax I think, though, I recognize a lot of structures and know kindof how to read them.

Coda 04-18-2011 04:25 PM

It's similar enough to Java to make parallels, assuming you're treating PHP's strings as character arrays instead of String objects.

Duchess 04-18-2011 04:47 PM

I say just read the manual XDD It helped me figure practically everything about the language out... well at least the basic stuff required for this.

This is the Manual Go to the "Language Reference" section and read up. It's not too long and I'm sure it'd be used in the future.. sometime =P

I tried running the code here in the office but then it gives an error... I tried removing some lines in the code that causes the error and I got a result...

Lucid: 04-19-2011 03:25 AM

the contest was written in a way to prevent people from just running the code and getting the result; I believe it has to be deciphered manually to get the correct answer. of course, I'm not the best person to ask about it.

Duchess 04-19-2011 03:31 AM

Imo... it's not fun to just run it =3=

I love manually doing this. It reminds me of IT class back in school =]

Cazzidy 04-19-2011 03:43 AM

I tried it manually before trying to run it and got a different answer from the one generated but actually close enough...

Duchess 04-19-2011 03:44 AM

I did it manually and got it right.. SO I suggest you go with that and ignore the generated one

Cazzidy 04-19-2011 03:55 AM

delete please, accidental double post

Duchess 04-19-2011 03:57 AM

Double posted? O_o OR triple? XDDD

I'm just saying send in the manual one to be certain.

Cazzidy 04-19-2011 04:01 AM

sorry for the multiple posts... my internet in the office is fluctuating...

Duchess 04-19-2011 04:06 AM

Ouch. That must suck >.<'' It's cool =]

Lucid: 04-19-2011 04:07 AM

don't worry, I took care of it. :3

thanks Lucid! *luffles*...

Has everyone submitted their answers? it's like few people are trying out the coding contest... sadly... i enjoy this type of things...

Duchess 04-19-2011 04:23 AM

I know there are people who are attempting it.. But I'm not sure if they are done or have submitted anything yet

Sei 04-19-2011 11:13 AM

Another person has solved it and another is attempting! *nods*

Coda 04-20-2011 09:34 AM

So!

Sei tells me there have been two people who have submitted the correct answer so far!

Let's get some more!

Coda 04-26-2011 11:37 AM

Here's another challenge for the last few days!

Write something for ME to solve! :D

It's mostly for fun, but I'll give 20 runes to my favorite submission and 10 runes to the runner-up.

PM stuff straight to me. Use whatever language you want; I can at least read almost everything in common use today. If I can't solve it, bonus points for you!

Cazzidy 04-28-2011 09:37 AM

-=What you're allergic to cats?...=-

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l7...ividerLong.jpg

that would be really hard since Coda is like the God of coding! but this sure is fun... goodluck everyone!...

Too bad I don't know anything about computer code.

Ashy 04-30-2011 09:45 PM

ill give 5k to whoever rickrolls coda

Duchess 04-30-2011 09:55 PM

In coding???

OH God Ashy.. the thought tingles me insides... I feel... I must attempt it 8D
