Lyrics
What sort of lyrics does everyone prefer in music they listen to?
Provide an example, if you can. For me, rich, intricate, dark, and poetic. I appreciate religious or mystical themes and allusions, but really, anything that can be pondered and analyzed. Lyrics that don't get boring after you get to know a song. For my example, Soft Pluvia Murmurs Piano, Tales of Dark |
I like lyrics that sound pleasant, even if they seen silly or make little sense. What drives me nuts are songs that are written with very obvious or forced poetics. If the lyrics are complicated or intricate, I prefer the song to me minimal in design, with fewer intruments or elaborate stretches of music and what not. I guess I like something of an inverse relationshp between complexity of lyrics and complexity of music.
I like to sing too, though it's been some time since I've done anything outside of moments on my own. I gravitate towards songs that are pleasant to sing, where the lyrics make up the melody more than the intruments. I know this doesn't particularly talk about specific words or sentences but I like it when the voice feels like an intrument itself. Some of songs where I like the voicework would be Nightwish "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" (I love it even though I don't understand it), Triakel "En Vacker Vän" and Stone Sour "Bother," all with fairly simple instrument work. |
Mm, yeah, I'm almost completely the opposite. :p
I prefer the instruments to create a poetic resonance with the lyrics and bring them to life. Of course, I can't, don't, and won't sing, so that doesn't factor into my preference. I look at music like poetry I can take in audibly. |
Oh it's well and good to have complex music going on behind song, but I'd rather it be simpler so I can enjoy the intruments without trying to focus on the song. Of course, that goes away after hearing the song a few times. Simple statements like the chorus in "Carved in Stone" I really like with the more intense instumental background, expecially with the layered voices. Men's choir is something I've always liked. I went to a Welsh mens choir concert when I was in elemtary school after studyingi Wales.

Looks like we're in three different categories. I guess you could call the lyrics of the songs I listen to "depressing" or "angry"...
For example, Karakuri Burst from Vocaloid and Linkin Park lyrics...Nickelback can also be decent. Sometimes I just go with OSTs and stuff, lyric-less XD |

Not when they sound awesome :D -points to the AC series OST and MMO soundtracks-

I still have my LP CD somewhere. I actually went to one of their concerts. The only concert I've ever been to! I like the tunes they have, but to me it does come close to 'yelling' but doens't loose the melody, which annoys me. "In The End" is one of my favourites along with "Numb". I'm not too familiar with their new stuff. I tend to ignore the rapping though. I'd say they are a band I don't listen to for lyrics but for overall sound. It' similar for me with the odd song by other bands like Static-X or Disturbed. David Draiman's voice is neat but I rarely pay too much attention to what he's actually saying.
|
In terms of LP's rapping....I'll take My December and In The End, and Somewhere I Belong.
The rest of the rapping/screamo is borderline for me. |
I'm not that fond of "Somewhere I Belong" music-wise, but I love the critters in the video. They look like the walked out of a Dali painting.
|
Cause I'm strong enough to live without you
Strong enough and I quit crying Long enough, now I'm strong enough To know you gotta go There's no more to say So save your breath and walk away No matter what I hear you say I'm strong enough to know you gotta go I just posted those lyrics on Facebook, so something like this. xD |

Hmm. Tricky to think about lyrics that I like in terms of actual language since I like the as much for sound or flow. These ones I like, mostly becasue of the way the melody works the the rhyme:
HIM - "Funeral of Hearts" "She was the sun Shining upon The tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail He was the moon Painting you With it's glow so vulnerable and pale ... She was the wind, carrying in All the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget He was the fire, restless and wild And you were like a moth to that flame The heretic seal beyond divine A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind The last rites for souls on fire Three little words and a question why..." I'm not big on the chorus, but I like the parts in between. I'm a big fan of internal rhyming, though having it here without the meldoy kind of messes the rhythm up. |
i think dark and hurtful music is the best i don't pay attention to the artist or anything though. :o
|
So watching Idol with mom last night (recorded) and one guy decides to sing Journey's Don't Stop Believin', which is most cool, and the line "midnight train going anywhere" remind me of "Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum. I love the song but decent recordings of it seem hard to come by. When I first started looking for it I had to search it by the lyrics because I didn't know the title (but I could guess) or the artist.
|
That's a good question since I like various types of music, I like the kind of songs that have this complex meaning in the lyrics they can be emo, dark, life experiences, love, heartaches, and I know one song that is close to biblical but it's made in a dark way (the Book of Revelation)
I like the types that gets you to think "What does that mean? Does it mean this or that?" Or it has a complex story that it gives you though of what it means, not the total obvious. Fireflies- Owl City I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay Awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems Falling Down- Oasis The summer sun, it blows my mind Is falling down on all that I've ever known Time will kiss the world goodbye Falling down on all that I've ever known Is all that I've ever known |
I enjoy a wide spectrum of lyrics, from ones that sound more like poetry to ballads (as in, telling a story) to lyrics that are rhythmically very interesting.
Still, I don't like lyrics that are too pretentious or too vapid. "Partying!" lyrics, I tend to find pretty ridiculous, as well as "I am so sad, woe is me, wah wah wah" lyrics. Lyrics are an art form, and some people get it right while others fail miserably. Examples of some of my favorite lyrics: "Poetic" Janis Ian, Tea & Sympathy "Rhythmic" The Beatles, Come Together "Ballad" Traditional (Performed by Bob Dylan), The House Carpenter |
I mentioned this in the favourite line or verse thread, but I like the Lyrics to "Vetern of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult. I liked the song to begin with, and the lyrics were easy to follow and I have something of a fascination with military-esque things.
|
I enjoy a lot of songs as long as the lyrics are easily understandable.
Some Rap, mainly Japanese, pop, rock, old country.. throw in the Tokens, or the Four Seasons.. Boy George... ._., I listen to a lot of stuff xD |
I have to admit, I do like a fair bit of country, (I tried to avoid but it grows on one like a fungus once you're exposed!). I find the lyrics amusing often enough but I haven't found any particular song that strikes a cord or anything. I like the story part though. "Who's Cheatin Who?" I like more for the lyrics than the actual song (LOTS of Alan Jackson fans up where I used to live) and "Fiddle in the Band" is one like, though I can't remember who played it. My family up north holds a yard party every year and there's a playlist of 300 specifically picked songs for it.

Alan Jackson <3
I like a few of his songs but i cant remember the names.. I think one of them goes like this: Work Work all week long been punchin that clock from dusk till dawn countin the days till friday night just waitin for all the conditions to be right I want a good time I may be missing words from it or its messed up somewhere.. xD I don't have it on my iPod. Ugh To day I heard a OLD Alabama song.. "Mountain Music" and I was.. ahh! this is OLD and now I feel old! D8 |
"Everywhere you look, you can write a book
About the trouble 'tween a woman and man, But you cannot impose; you can stick your nose Into somethin' that you don't understand. Still you wonder Who's cheatin' who, who's bein' true And who don't even care anymore? Who's doin' right by someone tonight, Who's care is parked next door?":D Best Ever: Garth Brooks "Friends in Low Places." Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots, And ruined your black-tie affaire. Last one to know, the last one to show I was the last one you thought you'd see there. And I saw the surprise, and the fear in his eyes As I took his glass of champaigne, And I toasted you, said 'Honey we may be through," But you'll never hear me complain! 'Cause I got friends in low places Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases My blues away! I'll be okay. I'm not big on social graces, Think I'll slip on down to the oasis, 'Cause I got friends in low places! Well I guess I was wrong, I just don't belong But then, I 've been there before. If everythingn is alright, I'll just say goodnight And I'll show myself to the door. I didn't mean to cause a big scene But give me an hour and then, I'll be as high as that ivory tower, That you're livin in! 'Cause I got friends in low places!... That's all off the top of my head so might not be 100% accurate there. ;). Hmm...there's that internal rhyming thing again. |
Hehe
I'll always be a Billy Ray and Shania Twain Fan.. x3 "All Gave some, Some Gave all! Some stood true for the red white and blue and some had to fall." Ugh I loved that song so much. |
That Billy Ray Cyrus, Billy Ray? I only know Achey Breaky Heart and all the parodies that we made of it in elementary school. It sort of became a joke song to sing, just like in high school the class clowns were all seeing who could grow the best mullet. I wasn't around for that.
|
Yea Billy Ray Cyrus <3
I saw him in concert when I was VERY little xD I still have the concert T somewhere.. of course I can't fit into it o.o, Oh his songs "She's Not Crying Anymore" "Crazy Mama" and "Call Me Daddy" are beautiful <3 "Call me daddy, when i'm feelin blue call me daddy, I need to talk to you Call me daddy, and help me through Then he bowed his head to pray call me daddy." I can't remember the way it went.. >< Storm in the Heartlands is another good song from him x3 |
I'm a fan of songs with an underlying message that you might not necessarily get after listening to them once. A lot of My Chemical Romance songs are like that for me, and Emilie Autumn. One of my favorites is "The Art of Suicide" by Emilie - the first time listening, it made me extremely depressed because I thought that it was a straightforward song about being suicidal, but after really thinking about the lyrics I realized that she was being sardonic and driving home the point that suicide does not turn out to be as pretty and romantic as most drama queens seem to believe.

Bwahahahahahaha!
I'm such a trend setter. ;D |
Congratulations?
Anyway, I love these lyrics, they're so honest and yet, still poetic and open to interpretation: The Lies I Sire Before it lies The story of invoking joy Endless love Given to me through a dream A following from above I couldn't help myself God walks by my side Within my limbs burns hate Believe me how I cry The tremble of my hands Blinded by my tears But I stand heroic The holy words I heed With glory and blazing eyes I rise into bloody skies Myself a storm, ravaging The wrath of God, down I bring With mercenary's smile I rise up from the shade As the king of all souls The pounding of my wings Tearing through the night Death's taking his toll The searing heat Burning eyes Fury and fire A forest gone Torn victims The lies I sire My work is done and I leave none The passion in my dying worth The grief I leave is meaningless The lies within these ancient words |
Right now I'm obsessing over Luka Megurine (a vocaloid)
the song I'm listening to right now is Dancer In The Dark I couldn't find an english translation for this song.. sorry =( Another song of her's I love is Double Lariat |
I find I tend to like the sorts of lyrics that show up a lot in power metal, like Hammerfall or Dragonforce, probably from the storytelling aspect of them. At the same time though, I'm just as likely to want to roll my eyes or groan at what comes off as either really obvious or just plain typical. I like the fantasy style references and superntural stuff, but the constant barrage of words like glory, pride, honour, blah blah blah, just start to lose meaning and feel like filler after a while.

Can't help myself. My friends were playing music today.
"Anyone with half a brain Can see the Human race has gone insane. At this point I dont know If I'll upset the status quo If I throw poison in the water main. Put your ear to everybody's heart And hear that breaking sound. Hopes and dreams are shattering appart And crashing to the ground. I cannot believe my eyes. The world's full of hate and lies. Can you see? Evil inside of me Is on the rise." Catchy ;). Courtesy of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. "Brand New Day" |
I went through my playlist today and found this.. =w=
*if you do not like sexual inuendo's or anything sexual.. don't click the spoiler* M! by Voltaire <3 I love his songs xD |
The song Love 2012 by 3oh!3 has been my anthem for a little while now. Finally I just gave up on trying to make everyone else in my life happy and wanted to focus on myself, and this song has sections that really mean that to me.
Link to a video with the song. |
Key of Twilight, from the .//hack series
Come with me in the twilight of a summer night for awhile Tell me of a story never ever told in the past Take me back to the land Where my yearnings were born The key to open the door is in your hand Now fly me there Fanatics find their heaven in never ending storming wind Auguries of destruction be a lullaby for rebirth Consolations, be there In my dreamland to come The key to open the door is in your hand Now take me there I believe in fantasies invisible to me In the land of misery I'm searchin' for the sign To the door of mystery and dignity I'm wandering down, and searchin' down the secret sun Come with me in the twilight of a summer night for awhile Tell me of a story never ever told in the past Take me back to the land Where my yearnings were born The key to open the door is in your hand Now take me there to the land of twilight |
A song that is always lovely to listen to, and I found out a lot of the lyrics actually are about other singers that died during the 60s.
American Pie by Don McLean. |
There's been a lot of speculation as to what that song refers to (ie. John Lennon, Big Bopper, etc) and there's doesn't seem to be any concensus on it. I just like to listen to it and not worry too much about meaning. I first enountered it when I was young and my dad played it for me. It was about the time CD's were first coming out, so I grew up listening to it, and as I got older I started paying attention to the lyrics so it's sentimental in a couple ways for me.
Haven't heard the Madonna version (I think it's Madonna) and I'm not all that sure I want to. |
I don't really listen to lyrics so much as the music they compliment. I love the music Gorillaz writes, I adore Kanye West, and I love the style and raw, in you face, attitude Innerpartysystem's music sometimes has.
|
It's not actually the lyrics of the song that bothers me or attracts me to the song. It's the beat or the artist or the overall sound. I mean there are some songs with fantastic lyrics that I can't stand, and songs with really basic lyrics that I love.
I do however adore people who can make a story out of lyrics and rhyme even the most obscure word with something else. Eminem is a master of that. (: |
I like some of his later stuff, the songs post 8-Mile (I think) even if I find them a bit gritty at times for my usual tastes. Soldier, (I think that's the right title) for instance.
|
This just came to me yesterday, one of the songs I used to like some time ago was Third Eye Blind's "Slow Motion" which to me a great example of lyrics not matching the melody of the song. I like the melody and the singer and enjoy listening to the song but the lyrics still want to make me cringe.
The lyrics are graphic and quite violent, but the song itself has a very lazy flow to it, and the singer himself doesn't seem too concerned with putting much punch into what he's singing. He just seems to float along with the melody while talking about shootings, wife beating, and such. After all that though, the last verse is a cheeky comment on the contents of the song and the nature of the listeners. |
