Vegetarianism
So a couple of weeks ago, after wrestling with my conscience for a good few months, I decided to go vegetarian. Eventually I hope to cut eggs and milk out of my diet as well and turn full vegan, but currently it isn't plausible because I live with my dad out of term-time. He's having a hard enough time coming to terms with my vegetarianism. xD
I don't want his thread to turn into an arguement so please keep thing civil. Respect other people's opinions please. Share recipes if you have any good ones! I want to try some new yummy foods. :D Have you ever had a vegetarian/vegan diet? How was it? What are your thoughts on the fur trade? |
My sister is a vegan, and is always coming up with new dishes that I wish I could try but we don't live near each other. I think being vegetarian/vegan is an alright way to go, and I could probably do it myself if I were better at cooking. I love vegetables, and tofu, but I do have to admit I'd miss having milk and eggs.
The only think I don't like about the vegetarian movement is the meat substitutes. I want my tofu and the like to taste like TOFU, not some meat flavored thing that doesn't make sense. I'm not really a fan of soy burgers either, but if I hunted a bit I could probably find that recipe for a vegetarian patty that was made from peas. I never tried it myself but it did look good after all. And, umm...fur trade? o.o The only fur I wear is from my overly sheddy cat... ;) |
If you go vegetarian you can still have milk and eggs. :3 I made falafels last week at home. It was messy but fun! And they tasted pretty good. My favcouite is bean burgers, though. I'm having them today. :D
I agree about the fake meat thing. It seems silly to me. Especially because they don't even taste like what they say they are. I do like the sausages, though. |
My mum's vegan and she makes the best tofu stir fry. I find tofu is at it's best after being marinated in soy sauce for a couple of hours. And tempura tofu is the best, but isn't healthy lol.
I love qorn and prefer it to chicken. I did go vegetarian for a while but my defective body couldn't handle it. |
Taiana, I'm not a big fan of tofu. D: It has a very weird texture... My vegan friend makes amazing chocolate mousse with silken togfu though! Mmmm. :D
|
I love tofu, I'm just not a vegetarian >> Sometimes I will add it instead of meat to hamburger helper and the like XD The only concern I currently have anout going completely meatless is that frozen ground meats don't lose much compared to fresh, unlike frozen vegetables compared to fresh. I currently cannot go shopping once a week for fresh ingredients ><
|
It's very annoying to have to use up all the vegetables within a few days. D: But if you make like a vegetable curry, you can freeze some of it and then the next day make something else with the rest of the veg and freeze some of that. Then you don't have to worry abot it going off!
|
Haha, we'll see if I can possibly do that. My roommate kinda eats a lot so I don't have much in the way of leftovers :3
|
.. I eat soy burgers, and soy dogs. xD;
They're seriously delicious. Fake meat actually tastes really good to me. <.<; |
I've been a vegetarian for about 5 years now. C:
I'm not a huge fan of fake meat if it's supposed to taste and feel like meat, but I don't mind boca burgers. my favorite veggie patty is Gardenburger, though. it's a bunch of vegetables and rice squished into a patty, not something trying to be meat. I love tofu as long as it's cooked well enough. some tofu dishes are just weird, but I know well enough how to prepare it. restaurant tofu always turns out better than mine though. I want to know their secrets! I looooove bean burgers. I have a vegetarian cookbook with a really good recipe for them in it. I'm going to have Airi email me all the vegetarian recipes she typed up for me, and I'll post up the ones I've tried when I get them. White and I used to run a Vegetarian hangout, but it kinda died because there weren't enough people posting in there. we shared recipes and talked about foods we liked and random other conversations and stuff. if there's enough interest, maybe I could revive it. |
I'm leaning more towards to Vegetarian side, myself... only problem is... I love chicken so much. Any white meat, really. Turkey, too. XDD;
Other than that? I'm STRICTLY Vegetarian. I'd love to make my own spicy bean burger... the ones from Morningstar are amazing, but so calorie dense... |
but calories are delish. ;O; they keep me from dying/napping when I have to work all day long.
|
Haha. I don't think my body cares anymore. <.<;
But I promised Le Hermes I'd try to get myself back to 120. ><; Which.. means I have ten or eleven pounds to gain. Oh lordy. ><; |
My sister is a long time vegetarian, She would like to go vegan too but it doesn't make a lot of dietary sense for her at the moment. She always makes vegetarian though does cook meat for her fiance in a seperate pan. A lot of what she makes is really good and isn't special in anyway, it just lacks meat.
Savoury pies are good. We made chicken pies with piecrusts and canned veggies and potatoes as a standby that freeze well enough. She just puts in mushrooms instead of chicken, and a cream soup for the liquid. One popular thing also is peanut rice wraps: just plain rice, peanut sauce, lettuce and peppers in a torrilla. That one's vegan too depending on what's in the peanut sauce. Green beans in a peanut sauce are good, asparagus and squash (or pumpkin) rissottto (method of cooking rice so it's goopy). A lot of the pre-made veggo stuff we find isn't really worth the trouble unless you need something to pass as meat-like for stuff like tacos. |
I'm more on the grain junk food side of my diet because meat costs alot as well as vegetables and fruits but I'm trying to put those into my diet. So far my bady doesn't like thick greasy beef like steak but i can handle Poultry and lighter meats
|
I think this is in the wrong forum... This goes in Community Discussion if I'm correct...

Lifestyles seems an okay fit for this. Could probably go in either spot I imagine.
I'm the other way around Ultima. I love beef and red meat in general, particularly steak, but I can only usually handle so much chicken. Grease I find tends to be relative to how one cooks the meat. I've seen really dry beef and really oily chicken. I do like to balance meat with something else though, unless it's a small meal. Usually a vegetable or potato of some kind, not usually a straight starch. |

Batty, to each their own, I suppose. :3 Some fake meat is ok, but I don't think they should market it as "meat-style" because it usually doesn't taste of the meat it's styled on. xD Lucid, I wonder if we have Gardenburgers here. They sound nice. I suppose I could try and make something similar myself if I can't find them. :3 Any recipes you have would be much appreciated! :D I love trying new food! Also, I could help out with the hangout if you needed it. :3 Quiet Man, Becoming a full vegan is a lot more inconvenient as well because a lot of food has milk or egg in it in some way. You pretty much can't eat in Italian restaurants for a start because they put cheese in EVERYTHING. D: It helps to live in the right town, I think. Some are more vegan friendly than others. This week I've had to cook meat dishes for my dad. He's having a hard time getting to grips with why I'm a vegetarian now. xD He keeps blaming my vegan friend. I love pie! :D I might try and make one this week when I'm back home. Echo, how unhealthy. x) You can buy bags of frozen vegetables for fairly cheap and they last longer! Try that. :3 Mis, vegetarianism comes under lifestyle, no? I'm happy for it to be moved if a mod doesn't agree. ^^ The meat I most miss is pork. I love bacon. :C But sacrifices must be made, no? ^^ |
Darn it, now I want chocolate soy pudding. I ate waaay more sweet stuff when I was vegetarian XD
|
Oh I know all about being the right city. My sister and I used to live up in a rural community where hunting is a common pastime and you are quite likely to get funny looks if you mention being vegetarian. The bar we used to go to all the time added a veggie wrap on the menu simply because my sister ordered every time we came in and we came in a lot.
She still lives up there, I live down here in Vancouver now, and vegetarian alternatives are everywhere, especially with all the ethnic foods around. I remember once running all over campus trying to find something to eat with meat in it because all I could find was vegetarian food. There is at least one restaurant around that lists their entire menu at vegetarian pricing and lists "add meat for X" on the side. I think that's a great idea. |
I went Veggie to try it out. I hate red meat and I'm not a fan of Pork or lamb. But bacon and ham and such kept calling to me and I started to not eat properly again. XD
I would be vegan if I kept off the meat and eggs, I hate dairy DX |
I enjoy read meat far too much to give it up, and I find I feel listless and icky when I haven't eaten much in the way of meat but I imagine I could adapt to a veggo life if I did it for long enough. I really get peeved though when I see people wasting meat. I have enough respect for what goes through getting meat and when I see someone ordering a large steak and then leaving half of it on the plate I get ticked. Have some awareness of what you're eating!
