Project Runway?

Okay, am I the only one that watches this? ...even if it's mostly for Tim Gunn?

The new season starts next week and I'm excited, just mostly for the Diva antics of some of the contestants and the first 'Make it work!' of the season!

Who's your favourite designer they've had in the past? Favourite judge? Least favourite of either?

Come, share, be fabric-nerdy with me :)

Quiet Man Cometh 07-18-2011 11:13 PM

Nope! I watch it too, when it's on, and I got my mom watching it. :).

Personally, I like Project Runway Canada a little better because I like Iman better as a host than Heidi, but I watch them both.

I've only seen a few seasons. From Runway Canada I like Jessica and Sunny, both from the same season (2 I think), and I was rooting for Seth Aaron in the last season I watched (repeat). I can't remember the guy I like in the more recent season we were watching (pre-Seth Aaron's season I think? I'm wonderfully helpful arne't I?!). Could never get the timing right. Same season as the guy with the sort of bright punky/funk style. Had large bright coloured glasses a lot. I thought Ping was adorable and wanted to see more of her stuff but didn't happen.

And yes, Tim is awesome :D.

Ashy 07-19-2011 07:23 AM

ive been watching project runway for a couple of seasons now and man nina garcia has no fashion sense whatsoever! they should put tim on that panel instead :D

Quiet Man Cometh 07-19-2011 07:33 AM

Who was the guy who wore a hairnet and colonial style clothing? The one who made the dress out of corn husks? I never did manage to catch that episode. Annoys me because I like the ones where they need to use unconventional materials. He was forth or so in the season I think. Season 1 or 2?

Ashy 07-19-2011 07:40 AM

oh god thats too many before my time ><

Quiet Man Cometh 07-19-2011 08:10 AM

I heard about the grocery store episode and managed to catch the repeat season. He was an interesting sort. :)

Fey 07-19-2011 11:27 AM

waaaaaaaait, there's a canada version??!! I must find this on-line!

I agree, Nina needs a brain swipe, her opinion is usually so opposite mine it's funny.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-19-2011 11:01 PM

Yeah, there's a Canada version, though I only know of 2 seasons so far. I really ought to look this stuff up. We get here on Slice network a lot. I find it's a toss up between the two. I like Iman better than Heidi, but Tim better than Brian. I like Sunny Fong from season two, and Jessica Biffy also from season two. Biddell (not sure of his first name) won season one and he has some interseting stuff. I really liked his tiny leather hoody with weaving on the sides. He wasn't my favourite overall though.

I have never been one for fashion (to some family members' lament) but I started watching the show in university when there was nothing else around on tv. I like the whole creative process thing that goes along with it, and watching the clothes being made.

Fey 07-19-2011 11:04 PM

I usually have one favourite that makes it all the way through, but I think only one of 'em has ever won. I usually STRONGLY dislike the winners.... I do admit, Heidi...I will smack her one day, with a brick.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-19-2011 11:36 PM

I was happy when Sunny and Seth Aaron won. I liked them both. There were a couple others that didn't make it that I liked. Makes me sad when that happens.

snarkylittleshark 07-22-2011 10:45 PM

Oh. This was one of the few shows I used to watch religiously before the show was moved to Lifetime and the stations had a big spat with each other.

Ashurato 07-22-2011 10:47 PM

I loved Project Runway (mostly for Tim Gunn as well). But my favorite never wins.

Fey 07-23-2011 08:14 PM

yeeeeeah, my favs never win either...and season premier on Thursday!!

Quiet Man Cometh 07-24-2011 01:05 AM

Damn! When and what channel? Not sure that I'd get it but still, wanna know these things. ;)

Aslo, to be random, would anyone here happen to know how to wash taffetta?

Fey 07-24-2011 06:36 PM

LOL I watch it online at lifetime.com...so I'm assuming it's on TVs lifetime channel
As for washing taffeta, it depends, is it silk taffeta or poly? And are you washing the whole thing or spot cleaning?

Quiet Man Cometh 07-24-2011 10:08 PM

Bride's maid dress. I would guess silk tafetta? Not really sure. I suppose I could always look up the manufacturer's details.

Don't have a lifetime channel up here, but the closest I imagine would be Slice. (As in, 'Slice of Life' I assume). I suppose I could consider watching stuff on computer but I like my tv time. :)

Fey 07-25-2011 02:20 AM

well, unless you paid a LOOOOOOOT for the dress it's probably poly, so if you're wanting to clean the whole thing take it to a dry cleaners. if it's a spot clean use a bit of cold water with some gentle laundry detergent in it.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 03:13 AM

Ploy most likely, since it's cheaper than my other bride's maid dress that as also poly, but not taffetta.

Fey 07-25-2011 10:39 AM

yeah, they make silk taffeta, but it's like 27/yd...so that dress would be priiiiiiiiicy if it was silk. and I won't say Ive coveted it...but...I might have fondled it in the stores....

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 02:24 PM

Ah. I don't have much of a clue what it is, save that it's somewhat stiff, iridescent, and my mom is calling it taffeta so that's what I call it. It's flat though. Not bunched up or anything though it has some gathers here and there. Not sure what use I'm going to have for a shiny teal dress in the future but it's not bad as far as bride's maid dresses go. And the style managed to accomodate both myself and my sister-in-law who are of vastley different shapes.

Fey 07-25-2011 08:52 PM

ah, yeah, most of my brides maid dresses get sacrificed into the fabric scrap pile in my house. all of them...save the top from one wedding, are now in other costumes. Well, the pink one was donated, it was nooooooot good. at least yours sounds like it was vaguely flattering.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 09:44 PM

Oh both dresses looked great (two weddings in the last two years) but shiny teal is a little different from a more matte plum. Not sure where else I would wear that that. It kinda shouts "bride's maid" with the fabric but the cut is fairly simple.

Fey 07-25-2011 09:47 PM

yeah, most brides maid dresses aren't as versatile as the bride would like us to believe. I'd say if you like it keep it and wear it for silly things. if not, donate it, someone else may end up loving it.

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 09:57 PM

I'm being silly. This looks like it here:

Fey 07-25-2011 10:03 PM

aaaaaaaand link says no

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 10:06 PM

Works for me. Is disagreable link!

Fey 07-25-2011 10:06 PM

::beats it with a stick::
no idea why it won't work for me...but now that I think about it when my BF was linking me stuff from there it didn't work either...so maybe it's me, not the link

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 10:09 PM

Coule be your antivirus, or maybe it's just disagreable. It's 50/50 whether or not I can open a deviant art link.

So what are your costumes for?

Fey 07-25-2011 10:12 PM

my costumes are for...well...me, and occasionally friend, for conventions. I do anime, sci-fi, fantasy and comic costumes

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 10:16 PM

Ah. cool. Just wondering if you did like theater or anything similar, though I see a lot of work going into cosplay costumes. Get ideas from the show at all or is it just for fun?

Fey 07-25-2011 10:18 PM

oh I draft my own stuff just for fun too, I actually got into this via the SCA/historic re-enactment groups. and I love watchign how technically they are approaching things, I was self taught so I often have a cooooooompletely bass ackwards way of doing it

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 10:33 PM

Meh. Whatever works.

Thinking on the costume end, one of my favourite Runway episodes was the Drag Queen one. I loved the stuff, my favourite being the outfit and hairdo for "Acid Betty." I was a pink sailor suit that won. Hee hee.

Fey 07-25-2011 10:40 PM

yeeeeeeah, I loved that episode, and I love to see how they roll with the nontraditional 'fabrics' challenges

Quiet Man Cometh 07-25-2011 10:45 PM

Season 2 (I think) of Runway Canada had a challenge where they spent the night outdoors and they had to decide what to use from their provided gear. What they didn't use they had to make their outfits out of.

There was another episode where they had to use car materials, not sure which show or season, and another in Canada, Season 2 where they had to use sticky notes! :D

Fey 07-25-2011 11:32 PM

yeah, I liked when they went into the party store and got things...or when they had to use parts of a diner...those were awesome!

Quiet Man Cometh 07-27-2011 02:20 AM

I didn't see that episode! Must have been in a season I haven't seen yet. I've only watched maybe 3 full seasons of the show, both versions, and parts of a couple others.

Fey 07-27-2011 12:00 PM

I've seen all of...three or four seasons...and parts of others. Those were some seriously stumped designers though, it was hillarious

Quiet Man Cometh 08-04-2011 05:00 AM

Yay! Project Runway is on Slice channel again! Sucks that is't the same season mom and I have seen about three times now (Project Runway with Ping (I like Ping :)) Emilio, Seth Aaron, and Anthony. Fairly early still in the season. Means we still get to see the burlap sack episode. :)

Fey 08-04-2011 11:10 AM

oh I loved the burlap episode...not sure who I'm gonna root for in the current season...one episode isn't enough to make calls.

Madam Kira 08-04-2011 12:30 PM

I absolutely LOVE Project Runway! My favorite people on this season is the Woman who just started sewing, and the Asian looking guy with the London/British accent. xDD
