Makeup?

So all of you men and women out there who wear makeup.. I was just thinking about how little makeup I have. I don't have any makeup brushes or applicators, and I only have one palette with 8 colors, 4 lipglosses, and 1 blush color. The makeup is more of a sampler combination palette that I got for Christmas and the brand is Sephora. I also have mascara that doesn't work very well, a half bottle of a small thing of perfume, and a couple of other lipglosses in tubes that I rarely wear. This makes me feel a little deprived of my womanhood because I love makeup and playing around with it, and having this tiny amount of makeup is becoming more and more sparse every time I use it. I don't have money for any makeup but if I did, I would buy the 88 color cool shimmer eyeshadow palette, the 32 color lip palette, the 10-piece deluxe brush set in red, and the 24/7 Eye Liner, all from BH Cosmetics. I would also like a couple of new fragrances.

How much makeup do you have? What brands do you use/suggest? How often do you wear makeup? What specifics (eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc.) do you wear? Is there any makeup/perfume you'd like?

Fey 07-21-2011 01:47 AM

Oh wow, this is gonna get into a weird zone.

I used to work for a Mary Kay lady in HS(if you are not in the US, or just don't know, Mary Kay) so I ended up with a LOT of their brand makeup. I rarely wore any of it, and it just migrated with me through life. I'd put some on for interviews or to go out on the town, but mostly it just existed.

Then I got into costuming hard core. I now have stage makeup and daily makeup and pretty much everything under the sun! But now I mostly wear it when I'm in costume, though still for interviews and the occasional night out.

Some things I usually tell people who are looking into makeups. Take allergies into consideration. If you're allergic to bees specifically read ingredients on mascaras and lipsticks, they can contain beeswax which can trigger some allergens.

As to brands. Obviously Mary Kay, Ben Nye, MAC and Krylon. That being said, I look less at brands and more at 'is this a colour I want/need?' Outside of my serious stage makeups I don't care if it's a $5 pallet or a $50 if it has what I need.

As to perfumes, I don't know if they even make it still, but I used to be obsessed with Aqua di Gio by Georgio Armani...loooooooooove that stuff, but so expensive!

CupcakeDolly 07-21-2011 01:53 AM

I have quite a bit of makeup, but most of it never gets used - I can leave the house wearing foundation and eyeliner and feel satisfied that I've "put on my face." =P

I'm sooo jealous that you have anything from Sephora - that stuff is supposed to rock hard. I go with Maybelline or L'Oreal for different things. There's a brand called Hard Candy, I think it's just a Wal Mart brand, but not entirely sure. They make stuff in bright coloring for us funky people, and I use their eyeshadow - which turns metallic and shiny when you apply it with a wet sponge - and their colored mascara.

Speaking of mascara, though, I've found that a lot of it doesn't "work well" unless you play with your eyelashes to the point of them falling out. There's lots of applying, brushing, curling, re-applying etc. involved to make your lashes look big and fluffy like the girls on television. I usually just don't bother with it.

Edit: Fey, my mother used to sell Mary Kay, so I've been gifted with her leftovers. I hate the lipsticks, but love the face-washing products and face powders. xD

Fey 07-21-2011 02:03 AM

yeah, I'm addicted to the cleansers, lotions and the like...it's like face-crack

And for mascara...what sort are you using? I rarely have issues with mine. Arguably I have thicker lashes than most.... I do have one trick, I have a clean mascara brush set aside to use after I put on my mascara and let it partially dry to separate the clumps. Beyond that I just curl the lash, apply mascara, separate and go. Well...usually after spraying on a fixative like Liquid Set....

Grave Desires 07-21-2011 02:03 AM

I'm actually NOT much of a make-up wearer anymore. For the most part, when I was younger, I used the stuff as a cover, because I honestly hated the way I looked. I love seeing other people do their makeup, but I personally could walk out of the house without.

Now a days, I just use the standard eyeliner, and mascara-- whichever brand is cheapest, and lasts, and I'm out the door.

Never been one for lipsticks and such, but I DO love me some lip balm, and gloss, and SHINEY LIP STUFF. xD;

I love the Hard Candy line of stuff-- I just don't think I'd ever be able to use it for much. =/

Ginger 07-21-2011 02:16 AM

I have red hair and pale skin with freckles, so it's difficult enough finding makeup that suits me as it is haha. I can't wear really bright colors because I'm so pale, but I can actually pull of a smoky eye pretty damn good with the right clothes and hair, and sort of a flirty look with a shimmery pink, white for a highlight on my brow bone, purple, and really dark brown eyeshadow that kinda acts as a liner since I don't have one. And of course a crappy mascara lol. I mean when I go to put it on, it seems dried out. I might have to put a tiny bit of water in it again, but that would probably just make it worse.

Fey 07-21-2011 02:33 AM

What colour are your eyes? with your dramatic colouring you'd actually be able to pull off quite a few dramatic looks....
and dont' put water in your mascara, that's what's making it clumpy, you're causing it to emulsify. Just buy new, it doesn't have to be expensive, just not dried out.

CupcakeDolly 07-21-2011 02:34 AM

Mm, yeah, I wouldn't recommend putting water in it. You might end up with some really neat-looking paint though. xD

I'm probably just not patient enough to deal with mascara. I have thin lashes, but they're dark enough that it almost looks like I'm wearing mascara.

And I would totally wanna make-up and dress-up Batterz if she ever came within 5 feet of me. <3

Echo-chan713 07-21-2011 02:36 AM

I'm all natural, I close to never wear makeup in the first place, but if I do then I try to make it look natural like light foundation then white shadow on the tear duct so that way the light reflects the eye shadow so that way it looks like that I got enough sleep.

And when I cosplay, it depends on the character, on the males It's the same as natural makeup with white eyeliner. And for the females It's black eyeliner on the bottom lid and/or mascara on the outer parts of my eyes.

I have 1 foundation that I've had since 2009, and they discontinued it. It's N 7 degree mousse foundation (I call it Jesus because it covers anything minor and it feels so light on me). Then my white eye shadow is the cheapest one from maybelline. Then the eyeliners is cheap as well N.Y.C both black and white.

So men do say that they like their women with little to no makeup, and it gets tiring to put on make up everyday. so the only times I wear makeup is for special occasions.

Sorry for my complicated makeup regiment rant.

Espy 07-21-2011 02:40 AM

I've -never- worn make-up before...If you've seen my pics in the Photo Album, you might know why XD I've been considering using eyeliner (actually, I only started thinking about it today, before I saw this thread...) Wonder if it would work for me.

Holly 07-21-2011 02:55 AM

I love makeup! I do not really prefer certain brands. I more or less go to the store and see what currently looks most interesting to me. They always seem to have some new sort of makeup out! My skin tone is very light. So, I always have to go with an ivory color for foundation. At one time I messed around with a bronzing powder... haha. I generally go with black or brown for eyeliner and mascara. Eye shadow could be anything depending on what I'm planning to wear that day. & usually I like a nice rose colored blush. I always keep it light. I don't want it to look caked on or anything! But I see nothing wrong with having a little fun with some makeup. > u <

Ginger 07-21-2011 03:02 AM

Fey - My eyes are hazel. They change from blue to green to blue to gray, but the majority of the time they're blue. I probably won't be putting water in my mascara then xD I've found that I like purples, pinks, browns, really shimmery coppers, and black eyeshadows, sometimes a shimmery dark blue. I haven't experimented much with dark blue but I know that bright blues don't look very good on me.

Cupcake - I wish my lashes were like that.. mine are nearly blonde O_O It's hard for me to put mascara on every single one of my lashes, so in the sunlight my eyelashes still look somewhat blonde even though I put a ton of mascara on. I don't like the clumpy look that I see so often on women, where their eyelashes look like spikes coming out of their eyelids >.<

Echo - Foundation bugs me because it gives me acne. Granted, it covers up the acne, buuuut I'd like to avoid scars xD I do enjoy my natural beauty, but I love to play around with makeup and having very little makeup, or money to buy makeup with, makes this difficult for me to do. I agree that putting makeup on and taking it off gets tiring. I don't always wear it, but when I have the time and am really into looking fresh I'll enjoy putting it on, and when it comes off is when it comes off (usually in the shower)

Espy - Eyeliner would look good on you, but not too much of it. Go lightly at first so it looks natural, post a pic, and post it here if you'd like constructive criticism :3

edit;
Holly - I love wearing makeup too! xD I try to go light on it as well because it tends to give me acne if I use too much at one time. I've had foundation put on me before and I get a small breakout from it every time it gets put on me. I wish I could wear it but it just clogs my pores really bad.

Grave Desires 07-21-2011 03:10 AM

Bahaha. Dolly playing dress up with me?

I would have thought it'd be the other way around. ;]

But seriously, I'd let you. XDD;

Quiet Man Cometh 07-21-2011 03:14 AM

I have about the same amount of make-up as you do, Ginger. I hardly ever do anything, but then, I'm also the type that can't be bothered to do more than brush her hair before heading out. I got rid of the spontaneous make-up purchases that I had a a teen girl (not many) and the stuff I was gifted except for what my sister gave to me when I graduated highschool. Her grad gift to me was a modest bag of make-up: 3 shades of eyeshadow, light to dark; white eyeshadow for highlights, lip gloss, concealer, and a small pack of disposable brushes. According to her, that's all one really needs for day to day stuff and all that she expected me to do. As the other part of the gift she showed me how to put it on.

Most of the make-up I have is in the bronze/gold to pink range because, as much as I want to fight it, baby pink is my colour. Appart from the basic three my sister gave me for layering, I have some gold glittery eyeshadow and some shimmery lip colour to go with ("Midnight Cowboy" and "Shotgun" respectively. I love make-up names :D) and a small container of pink glitter. That's about as exciting as I get, minus the stuff that I buy for art projects.

Brand-wise both my sister and go with whatever has the colour we want, though I check in with my sister a lot as she is a make-up and special effects artist. At school she used MAC which she still has a lot of, amd Ben Nye was apparently a big name for costume and film make-up (things like burn pallates and what-not). I recognize the name Hard Candy, and both she and I like the colours by Urban Decay. Naturally, I don't buy a lot of make-up because I can't justify the cost. A lip colour from Urban Decay can run $15.

All my stuff is fairly old. The only thing I'm carefull about is mascara because bad mascara can cause serious issues for your eyes so I always make sure mine is not older than a year. I have no isses with it but I only tap the lashes lightly with the wand and don't go all the way down to my eyelid. I also use brown instead of black because I'm fair and black sticks out too much.

Holly 07-21-2011 03:31 AM

I understand how that goes! If I go overboard I'm just asking for a breakout. Really? That's a shame. ; A ; I find that I can wear a small amount of foundation and be okay. It's just if it gets too heavy... that's when I have a major issue with acne. It makes since that you shouldn't wear it then! You have to do what is best for your pores. > u <

CupcakeDolly 07-21-2011 03:35 AM

Ehehe... I have what I like to call "dollhouse syndrome." I like playing with pretty things, and like to be played with just as much. x3

I've heard that Urban Decay has the best eyeliner though, so the cost might be justified there. I've used L'Oreal Paris Infallible eyeliner for a while, and it's worked the best out of any I've ever used, to the point where I'm afraid to waste my money on anything else.

And Espy, you're so cuuute the way you are! I'd love to see what you look like with eyeliner though. Like Ginger said, just start off light at first, probably just a thin line on the upper eyelid or something. =3

Demagische 07-21-2011 01:49 PM

I don't have much make-up, mainly because IMO I don't need too too much. xD I don't use eyeliner or mascara, one because I'd look like a raccoon and two I'd somehow manage to poke my eyes out ; n;

I use a foundation and blush from Physicians Formula, mainly because it's natural and doesn't feel like it's weighing down my skin. 8D

I also have some basic eyeshadow colors, a pallette of 16 or something from Jasmine La Belle and a specialty one from PF for hazel eyes. ; u; That has to be my favorite.

I just have a basic set of brushes for this stuff, a little bit of lip gloss, but not much. xD Oh, and some stuff from Bare Minerals that I only use for special stuff because it's expensive as hell and was a gift.

Serra Britt 07-21-2011 02:31 PM

I never really did the makeup thing...ever. I was never really "taught" to put it on and lots of people call me pretty without it so I have very little motivation to actually wear it. I do like polish on my toes because it looks good with sandals, and if I'm feeling really adventurous I'll go for polish on my fingers too, but tapping the keyboard as much as I do at home seems to ruin finger polish quickly for me. Sometimes I go for lip gloss too but that's very rare >.>;

Shenandoah 07-21-2011 04:54 PM

Most of my basic stuff... foundation, powder, blush, and concealer... comes from Clinique. My lipstick, only two or three shades at the moment, come from Revlon. Eye liners and mascara are typically Maybeline. The eye shadows are whatever. I pick up perfumes from either Bath and Body Works or from Avon (I only like Avon's Haiku). The rest of it is.... really not in my drawer.

I don't have a lot of blushes. My skin is so pale, its better to just stick with a shade I know doesn't look bizarre or like I'm sunburned. Eye shadow is the only place I really play around. I don't like to alter the basics too much.

CupcakeDolly 07-21-2011 05:28 PM

Eee, all of this makeup talk makes me want a makeover. x3

Except that I'd have nowhere to show it off. ;;

Fey 07-21-2011 10:24 PM

LOL I'm lovin' all this makeup talk, we're having a Mary Kay makeover at my place on Sunday, can't wait!!!
Though, I agree with a previous comment, I don' like thier lipstick, probably gonna sneak down my own...

Serra Britt 07-21-2011 11:12 PM

I wouldn't mind seeing myself with makeup on if it was applied by someone who knew what they were doing. My first attempt at wearing more than just lipstick was...scary...

Fey 07-21-2011 11:16 PM

go to a department store and sit down at the clinique counter, they'll show you how...so will most makeup places like Ulta or MAC...

Serra Britt 07-21-2011 11:48 PM

I was completely unaware of that >< Thank you very much Fey.

CupcakeDolly 07-22-2011 12:09 AM

Yup, the girls at Macy's are lovely and friendly and will give you a free makeover while teaching you and pushing their products on you, and I always make sure to stop by Sephora and try on all the different colored sample stuffs.

regine 07-22-2011 12:14 AM

I dont really wear make ups..i dont have a makeup kid..i dont use lipgloss and face powder,, im a very simple girl... XD

Fey 07-22-2011 12:15 AM

yeah, you gotta be sure to say no thanks at the end or you'll end up spending a looooooooooooot on the products, but it's fun. we used to do it before events in HS

CupcakeDolly 07-22-2011 01:48 AM

I used to go out with my friend and get it done when we were both feeling really down and hating how we looked. I usually ended up buying at least one thing as a thank-you if they were especially nice/helpful (or especially convincing <_<)

Ginger 07-22-2011 01:59 AM

That sounds like fun! I'm gonna try it one of these days xD

Sadrain 07-23-2011 09:35 AM

I don't have much makeup, nor I wear it much. I put on makeup only if I am going to concert or something like that. Other occasion is having photos taken, because without mascara, my eyelashes tend to "merge".
If I put makeup, then it's usually some powder, mascara, eye shadow and lipstick/lipgloss. I put my makeup accent on my eyes, so I sometimes make them rather "outstanding" with eyeliner, but that's rare, like really rare.
But in day to day life... I don't use makeup. Don't feel like I need it.

Buying wise, I don't have anything of the bring brands, and I think they don't really matter, except for your own asurement. I have some relatively cheap mascara that works better than maybeline one I got on make up sale.
I look for what I need and then get it. Right now, I am only missing some purple eye shadows, otherwise I am fine with what I have.

Saiyouri 07-23-2011 10:27 AM

(。◕‿◕。) I have nailpolish, a lipstick,
a lipgloss and foundation
oh and eye shadow. I only use the
nailpolish, otherwise I hate putting
makeup on. It involves doing work
and that isn't my thing.

Ginger 07-25-2011 03:03 AM

GUESS WHAT?!?! I finally got a cheap new mascara and an eyeliner/smudger combo! I am totally stoked and can't wait to play with it xD

CupcakeDolly 07-25-2011 03:12 AM

Whee! You should snap some pics and show us how it turns out! =D

Ginger 07-25-2011 03:47 AM

Lol I will try xD My camera is broken and my boyfriend is self-conscious about the quality of his cell phone's pics. I will still try ^^

Ae86 07-27-2011 09:08 PM

If I ever need any makeup i just steal it from Ginger.

Thanks bye!

Hoshi Astarte 08-01-2011 10:58 AM

I don't wear my makeup that often though I have quite a bit of it. Most of it is Maybelline and Covergirl with L'Oreal thrown in. This is because my makeup comes primarily from WalMart. However, when I want to pamper myself, I prefer Lancome and most anything from Sephora. My favorite pink lipstick is the discontinued Sugar Rose from Lancome. The best red lipstick I have tried is from Kat von D.

As to perfumes, my favorite is Sun, Moon and Stars. Though I also like Tommy Girl and Fire & Ice. I also like perfume oils from Auric Blends including Egytian Goddess, Ocean Song and the now discontinued Fire Goddess.

nyreen 08-01-2011 06:34 PM

I don't really put much make up on either. I use some foundation and I put on mascara, that's it.

Fey 08-02-2011 06:01 PM

whoot, my new mary kay stuff came in today! now to wait patiently for it to get delivered.....

Hermes 08-03-2011 03:39 PM

None. I think people are friggin beautiful and make-up is a worthless addiction bred by a superficial-obsessed society looking only for the fake aspects of a woman, not looking at what truly makes a good woman. Instead, they look for makeup and breast size.

^- My actual view

Fey 08-03-2011 03:48 PM

O.O
I can't argue that view, after all opinions are unique to the person. But until I can magically look better(and character appropriate) without it I think I'll keep my stash updated ;)
