Warning may contain offensive material [M]...

So I have come to realize, that I tend to offend people without really realizing it. I wanted to create a thread where we could talk about things that either we find offensive that not everyone else might, or things that we don't find offensive that have offended others (either in real life or online).

For instance, I was unaware Ginger (a name for Red-haired people) was an offensive term. All of my Red-Haired friends call themselves 'Gingers' and so I accepted it as a common thing. I was recently told otherwise and it pretty much astonished me.

So what other things have people said that ended up offending someone/heard that offended them?

I know many people who are okay with it. But you will always run into people who will find something they don't like about the world and it will dis pelase them and they will find a reason to pardon my lang, but to find a reason to bitch.

Kali_Namir 01-21-2012 04:04 PM

Yeah, I think I've only ever talked to three people who have found the term Ginger offensive.

NikkoGallarado 01-21-2012 04:08 PM

I know many people who don't care cause they fine with it and are okay with who they are to me people at times take way to much offence and granted I can be the same way also when people talk about me in away I know I don't like it but in the end I get over say to hell with it and just let it go with many other things people would say to me. I hang around cons I get called a Weebo mind you I am Asian kid you don't call an Asian kid a weebo. . . . ever. . .

hyjin 01-21-2012 04:08 PM

If someone talks about an inside joke among RL friends and you don't understand. Simply ask and they would explain without hesitation. Don't make a scene about it on the thread.

Kali_Namir 01-21-2012 04:09 PM

Yeah, my main issue is if I accidentally offend you tell me what I did and why you find it offensive, and I'll tell you why I don't.

hyjin 01-21-2012 04:12 PM

@Nikko the only time i would use that term is if someone i know who isn't Asian, but is trying to act like it and talks in a squeaky voice for the fun of it. that would be the only time i would. If they are Asian i wouldn't mind it and not even call them a weebo.

NikkoGallarado 01-21-2012 04:20 PM

Yeah but I go agree with the inside joke ideal, read first before freaking out. That happens with sheltred children often though. Which is sad, imo. But then again you can't change the way one is raised. I was called that cause someone thought I was not Asian. But I let it go some what.

Tiva 01-21-2012 06:19 PM

The small blonde with pink in her hair and is obsessed with hello kitty = weebo

I got called a ginger when i dyed my hair red and i didn't take much offense to it.. I kind of liked it, because people expected me to have a temper.

Offensive word - au natural - From the tanning bed, I asked a lady that once and got chewed out by her..... sorry i didn't want you to burn your private parts.

hyjin 01-21-2012 06:24 PM

??????? WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT???? Especially the point you were concerned for their well being...

Tiva 01-21-2012 06:31 PM

Cause, I basically asked if she was tanning in the nude, and it was her first time tanning. She didn't understand, I had to explain.

hyjin 01-21-2012 06:35 PM

*facepalm* some people are derps...

Tiva 01-21-2012 06:37 PM

Yep Oh oh I got another!

Zombie!

Kali_Namir 01-21-2012 06:43 PM

How is Zombie offensive?

I can see how Sarlack Pit is offensive, but that's just cause of my phone...

hyjin 01-21-2012 06:44 PM

Yes add sarlack pit in the list...

Desserts 01-21-2012 08:14 PM

Hmmm... Well when I'm mostly online on my Ps3, I be owning them In the game they call me -cough- -cough- a Nigguh -__-. I really not offended by It though because people say It all the time.

hyjin 01-21-2012 09:10 PM

Ummm... that is pretty stupid of them... i get called plenty of things but i just yell at them back and beat the crap out of them on COD...

Daring Scylla 01-21-2012 09:57 PM

I have never encountered anyone who found the term "ginger' offensive, but i have found people who thought words like 'schmuck' and 'putz' rude. I think they stem from offensive terms directed at Jewish persons, so I can see where that might be seen as rude.

Desserts 01-21-2012 10:11 PM

Well I met a lot of rude people on Cod, they say beaner to the mexicans...

Daring Scylla 01-21-2012 10:12 PM

That's just unkind
if i say something that's meant to be offensive, i make it implicitly clear i'm being offensive and i always avoid racial slurs because not only are they incredibly volatile, they are cheap and easy to use and show evidence of a low and uncreative mind.

Espy 01-21-2012 10:17 PM

Ok, uh, please don't call me a chino. I happen to find that term really damn offensive...Don't call me a weaboo either.

....And don't make random references to chicken fried rice within earshot of me.

Daring Scylla 01-21-2012 10:21 PM

It really annoys me when people call me a "mick" which HAS happened. I also hate people bringing up hitler around me, NOT because I'm like UUUGHH I HAVE TO PRETEND THE PAST DIDN'T HAPPEN but because i'm so damn tired of people expecting it to make me pissed.
it works, but not the way they intended. more like '...really? really?" than angry embarrassment.

hyjin 01-21-2012 10:21 PM

that kind of made me confused espy... but i think i could understand why...

Daring Scylla 01-21-2012 10:23 PM

'chino' is a nasty term for a person of Chinese descent, am I correct? Or is it directed at anyone with Asian heritage?

Tiva 01-21-2012 10:32 PM

In HvZ humans find being asked if they are a Zombie offensive and get annoyed with pulling out their kill cards.

Espy 01-21-2012 10:56 PM

-seriously would like to play HvZ-

"Chino" teeechnically refers to Chinese people, but...it gets used indiscriminately a lot.

Oh. "That's so Asian." "Ask Espy! She's smart." ...dear god. May I punch you in the face~?

Daring Scylla 01-21-2012 10:57 PM

i don't like that people assume i like getting drunk because I grew up in Ireland

Espy 01-21-2012 11:09 PM

-cough-choke- Sorry, Scy, that made my day.

I don't like...people assuming that I'm good at math and science. (I mean, I am, not to brag, but I'm not gonna do your homework for you because I'm too lazy.)

And people assume I know martial arts. (I would if my mom would let me learn Aikido.)

And play the piano. (That I do.)

hyjin 01-21-2012 11:12 PM

that is a lot of stereotypical issues that you have espy. i feel sorry for you.

Espy 01-22-2012 12:54 AM

Pfft. I can deal with them XD It's actually not much compared to some people...

Echo-chan713 01-22-2012 12:43 PM

I dyed my hair red but I wasn't called a ginger at all because it's a burgundy red.

Sometimes it's related to food like Oreo (Black but white in the middle), Graham Cracker (mixed brown/Hispanic and white), Crackers (basic cracker are white), Twinkies (Asian but white in the middle), Banana (Asian and white). And for some reason people can be offended by it. I just think it's yummy XD

I had a couple of kids getting offended when I said that they are total wangsters (white people that try to be black gangsters)

hyjin 01-22-2012 01:46 PM

lol wangsters... it is true though they are trying act like that...

Reyoki 01-22-2012 03:23 PM

I call one of my friends a coconut (hispanic on the outside, white on the inside) and I know she isn't offended by it, but I know some people could take it the wrong way. It makes my friend laugh because it reminds her of a Kawaii Not comic of a coconut drink saying "I'm complicated... or maybe just a little fruity!"

Twinkie is also a term for the submissive in a male homosexual relationship and can be offensive in that sense.

I've been called an Otaku plenty of times, and it doesn't bother me much. I know some people don't appreciate the title, though. It has a negative history in Japan where a sting of murders was committed by this guy who had an anime cave in his home. He was given the title "the otaku killer" because of it, and the name has been stained ever since. Here in the states, though, it has a similar air as the term "Trekkie" only directed towards anime instead of Star Trek.

Demonskid 01-22-2012 04:07 PM

Ok.. I am no longer calling myself an Otaku now ono that .. that just ruins it.. ;-;

Reyoki 01-22-2012 04:17 PM

Yeah, I had no idea about the term's dark past until I bought this nifty little book titled "The Otaku Encyclopedia" and decided to look it up.

Kali_Namir 01-22-2012 06:12 PM

I have updated the list so far. If you see I've left anything out just let me know.

For me, I don;t really care if someone calls me an otaku, but if they use it as an offensive way, then I'll say something.

Otaku for me is much more shorter and more secret than anime lover

Alpha 01-25-2012 08:44 PM

Well, apparently a matter of opinion and pointing out a matter of just sheer courtesy can be offensive.

hyjin 01-25-2012 08:51 PM

I have to agree with this one. People do tend to be offended when you provide an opinion...
