The Secret World of Arrietty
I can't wait to see this movie I'm a huge Hayao Miyazaki fan and I hope this movie will be even better then the last one that came out. What about you are you a huge fan of his work? What is your favorite movie that he did? Do you like seeing his movies in subbed or dubbed?
|
Is Arietty a Miyazaki film? I know it's Studio Ghibli but I wasn't sure who directed. I've seen a fair number of his films, my favourite probably being Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away coming up close second. I'm pretty sure Naussica of the Valley of the Wind is his as well. I like that one too but haven't seen it in a while.
I'm looking forward to seeing 'Arietty. I'm not all that fond of The Borrowers, though I don't remember all that much of it (not even sure I read the book. Might have been the movie I'm not all that fond of). I guess I just wasn't keen on the concept when I was a kid, but I'm curious from what the previews have shown so far. |
Miyazaki didn't direct it but his name is on it. I forget who it was that directed it, something like Yonobashi, but dont' quote me. I was busy yelling at screaming kids and their grandma who was talking on her cellphone during the movie.
It was absolutely worth it though. It's a little more Americanized than I liked on the names and the main male character looks like Seiji Amasowa from Whisper of The Heart, along with the cat Nina (thought the cat in WOTH is male, Moon and in THe Cat Returns) but it's amazing. I absolutely loved the thing. Fantastic. Studio Ghibli is always a winner. <3 |
Miyazaki producing maybe?
Don't know about Whisper of the Heart. Is that another Miyazaki film? The Cat Returns I've only seen parts of. I remember Moota, the fat cat that the main character nearly sat on in the beginning. |
I'm excited to see it, and for a weird change my sisters actually want to see it. Spirited away has been my favorite film of all time, and so this movie has me pump because it's coming from the same studio.
|
Was Ponyo from Ghibli? I can't remember but that one was pretty cute. I will occasionaly yell "Ham!" once and a while. I liked the concept, though some of it seemed a little odd, like the random human blood thing.
|
Ponyo is from Ghibli. Moota makes appearances in a few movies.
|
I Had seen the movie back on the 17th it was a good movie just felt like more could have been done with it. But it didn't turn out the way I had hoped, in many words anti-climaxtic is all I can say. But over all still good movie. I am the manry-est of men! |
I'm in the process of getting my boyfriend to take me to see the movie.
My favourite movies by him are Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. I do like Spirited Away also ^^ |
I'm hoping to see it when I go back home for spring break. I love Studio Ghibli, my favorite movie from them is Castle in the Sky. I loved the Borrower's movie as a little kid, but it's soooo different from the book. I'm so excited to see Ghibli's take on it.

My boyfriend said once his refund check comes from his taxes, we'll go out on a date. Maybe we'll see the movie. We were talking about it on the way to a friend's house that we both have had a lot on our minds outside of us that neither of us have really thought of anywhere to go (I just got accepted to grad school, no job, need money to pay stuff. He just took the LSAT again, score comes out on Wednesday, he's thinking of other stuff).
I hope we see it, it looks cute. For holidays I'll probably ask for some of his other movies (Christmas or my birthday) |
I had free tickets to this movie - but I couldn't go! I gave them to my little cousins so at least they got to see it. :)
|
Ah, I know what you mean! I've been waiting for it to come to the theater near my house, but no such luck.. Maybe it'll be in theaters after I move. It looks really good, huh? :)
|
i'm a big fan of the subbed rather then dub since you get to hear the original cast but, i also don't mind hearing some of the dub versions xD just on some parts i feel its exaggerated when its in english more then when its in japanese ; - ; i haven't seen arrietty yet but i've heard great things about it <333 miyazki's movies are always so awesome ehhehe <3
|
I still have yet to see this and I want to sooo much!
|
I loved this movie so much <3
the sweetness of the characters reminded me of howl and sophie~ |
I have no idea who he is but i really would like to see the secret world of Arriety it seems very interesting.
|
I'm actually torn. Because I really loved Arrietty so much that I can't decide if it's my favorite or if Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite.
I don't know how many or what all of Miyazaki's works are, but I'm wanting to say I've seen at least 5 of them. And I really have liked them all quite a lot. I really liked that Arrietty, while based on The Borrowers, really did not make me think of the American movie put out when I was a kid. I really was afraid it would be too similar, but it was very well done. |
I still haven't seen it!!! *CRY CRY CRY*
|
If I hadn't been able to find it online, I wouldn't have seen it yet either.
I hope you can find a way to watch it soon! |
I saw it in the theaters and would buy the DVD when I get money.
It's really very good and I thought it wouldn't be as good as the book. |
I didn't get to watch it when it was on the cinemas, but I'll buy it when I get the time and money. I'm a big Studio Ghibli fan, so it'll fit perfectly in my movie collection. ^^
|
I thought the movie was cute.

Quote:
and i love ALL studio ghibli movies, but my tops are The cat returns, Spirited Away, Laputa. And so everyone know Miyazaki did screen play on Arrietty |
I feel like I'm the only person who saw Ponyo in Japanese, and not English.
|
but i saw it in japanese and english.... hence the reason of hatred towards the way it was pronounced.
|
I haven't watched the Arrietty one yet, I remember seeing a copy somewhere when I didn't have the spare funds to purchase it.
I watched Ponyo in Japanese, they were showing a few selected Anime movies on TV and all of them English subtitles in Japanese.. My grandparents actually sat there and watched it with me through sometimes I ended up lost in what was going on.. I more prefer to see the English dubbed but I think now you get the choice of English and Japanese.. or at least when I bought the four Sailor Moon movies, I had the options of both languages. Through, I am hoping to learn a bit of Japanese cause all the animes I want to watch are not dubbed and I want to enjoy the Japanese episodes without fan subs. |
I downloaded a torrent of this movie and it was actually kind of boring. I was anticipating a little more action and dialogue. It was a cute movie though and I would watch it again, just not anytime soon.
My first and favorite Ghibli film was My Neighbor Totoro. <3 |
I understand what you mean, i was expecting more from it as well!
|
I LOVED Arrietty, which I just saw about a month ago. I didn't think it was boring at all, but it was very quiet and introspective, so I can see how others might see it that way.
I also thought Ponyo was creepy as heck and Howl's Moving Castle mutilated the much-superior book by making the last half totally nonsensical and dumbing down the characters, though >.> (I could REALLY get on a rant about Howl but I would rather not, so let's just say the book is way better.) Also, Miyazaki didn't direct Arrietty; he's not the only Studio Ghibli director, but people like to forget that. (I hope he'll make a movie as good as Princess Mononoke again one of these days... I liked Spirited Away a lot but Ponyo and Howl were just disappointing.) |
Although miyazaki didn't direct or produce it, but he did screen play the movie. So he had a pretty big say in what went on in the movie.
As for Howl's moving Castle I never read the book so i wouldn't be able to say if the book was better or not, though I think that is most likely is because you are not the only person to say that to me. Ponyo was defiantly not one of his award winners, but i really enjoyed it. not much to say about it because it was fantastic like any of his earlier movies. And I don't think we are going to see much of him any more he was suppose to be retired when ponyo came out, so for him to create another movie just seems unlikely, not impossible, but unlikely. Though I thought i heard somewhere that his son was going to be joining the team and become a director/producer, though i am not to excited for that..... |
Goro Miyazaki's already made a movie -- Tales of Earthsea, which didn't do all that well but I haven't seen it yet.
Apparently Hayao Miyazaki was kind of a dick about it because he didn't want his son getting into animation for whatever reason. As for Ponyo I found it REALLY FREAKING CREEPY. I don't understand why people think it's cute, frankly ^_^* And Ponyo herself was pretty much a total brat! |
People do tend to ignore how many people potentially died because Ponyo wanted to see what's-his-face.
