Look what I fail at!!!...Pixels...
So I tried my hand at pixeling, but I think I failed at it.
What do you think??? Base came from here... And I used tutorials from there to help me with shading... Also used tutorials from here... Sooo...for my first try how did I do??? Any tips or other helpful sites??? |
I think you did pretty good for your first try, this was mine yaers ago lol X See you did better than me. I liked how yours came out,I dont even do shading. So nope you didn't fail :3
|
I suck at drawing or I would have tried my hand at something like yours...
Funny thing is I made that outfit based on things in my closet...and all with a touch pad mouse... |
well, i would suggest hair XD but it is fairly good for a first try. going to tell you right now though, pillow shading is a very bad habit to get into, it makes it look very amateur no matter how many you do, pick one of the four corners of the next one you work with and put a big yellow circle in it, pretend that is the sun and make /that/ the point of light, it will help you so much more
|
See that's the part that is extremely hard for me...I can't seem to visualize the correct lighting...
|
which is what the dot is for, if you can see the sun you can see where the light is
|
I think your pixels look great! You should definitely aim for the next item design contest.
|
I might...idk...that also take the ability to come up with ideas...
If anyone has some good shading tutorials that'd be really helpful since that's really what I massively fail at... |
Firstly, I think you have a good start! The pillow shading has already been addressed, so I won't get into that, but one big big big thing to ALWAYS remember, is that you should never save as a jpeg. Always save as a png or as a gif, if you have transparency (which I can show you how to do, without having to use photoshop). Because when you save as a jpeg it gets all grainy looking, which isn't good. ^^
|
Yeah...I normally try not to, but I wasn't paying much attention the night I saved it...
I'll re-save it and upload it better when I get back from dinner... |
Okay! Just wanted to make sure that you knew, cause surprisingly, a lot of new pixelists don't know that. I can't wait to see it. :)
|
Updated...Not sure if I did it 100% correct, but it's saved as a PNG nows...
Nevermind...gonna have to re-do it, like entirely...stupid paint program... |
its very good for a first try kali!
Keep it up!! |
The main thing is that I don't exactly know what pillow shading is or how badly I did it...All I know is that it's a bad thing...
But the Lovely Twiggy has offered to help me with shading and the such! YAYS!!! I may actually get good enough to enter an item contest!!! |
I was more thinkin maybe pixelist someday Kali xDD

Lols. If I get that good, Fen Fen can have my skills...
But at this point I'm just gonna aim for item contests... |
Pillow shading is shading that's based heavily on where the outlines are, and not quite so much the general 'sun' thing people do. It CAN be used in very specific situations, such as when the subject is extremely close to a light source, and said light source happens to be between the subject and the viewer... But as you can imagine, these situations are few and far between! And by the time you even get into specifics like that, you can probably do it better.
I took a look at the tutorials you used, and I can see why you ran into a bit of trouble. Maybe this one will help more: link! Another thing I would suggest is working on getting rid of the stiff feeling. I'd suggest doing basic flats or simple shading if different cloths and clothing items. I'm pretty sure you can use your own to reference, yeah? But getting a looser, more natural feel will help leaps and bounds, too. Twigg is brilliant at what she does. If she's helping you, I'm sure you'll do well. |
Stiff?
And the main problem I ran into is the shading of the skirt... I tried to focus on a light source with the shirt, and tried to do the same with the skirt, but I didn't understand how in the heck to do the skirt and still have definition of the fold-thinggies... I saw that tutorial and other than telling me what I already knew about the lighting thing (that I really did try to do) it didn't seem like much help... |
It's a little difficult to tell with the quality, I must say. You could try making the source further to the side.
You really can't be afraid of going bold and using many tones to get the effect you need. sdzfkgzdivgb I'd doodle you something really quick if I wasn't about to die from pain. |
Yeah, the way that was saved killed it...but I'm gonna try again with the shading...but the skirt still alludes me...
The pallets I'm using are 6 color pallets... I may just leave the skirt blank for now until I understand it better...but the shirt I'm gonna try again... |
Keeping to things with fewer folds would probably be a good plan, then work your way up.
I totally skipped the stiff point, and I'm sorry. Working up to folds will be what really helps with the stiffness, but until then, things like not making the edges too straight, or the clothes too perfectly lined with your base... And, for example, that left (subject's left) shoe shouldn't be flat on the ground like the right is. Her foot is tilted, so part would be off the floor. Keep in mind that I don't pixel, lmao. Your try here is better than my first one was. |
I know...the shoes are a massive fail...but I tried...
I'm kinda working on a simpler yellowy prom dress thinggy...but idk... |
Pssh. Confidence, girl! Just keep trying, and don't be afraid of getting input. Some of us are actually helpful! ... Us that aren't me! Bwaha!
But really. Hard work wins over natural talent every time when it comes to art. |
I'm a pessimistic person...so optimism is rather hard...and I'm a worse critic for myself than anyone else...
|
Well, everyone judges themselves worse than everyone else.
It's settled then. Post things so we can tell you how amazing your progress is, mhm. |
I will, but it won't be for a couple days, homework comes before pixels...
I hope I can get a little better when I get a tablet...although I'm still not sure what kind to get, although in the thread I've got, bamboo has been the main one mentioned... |
Mine's a bamboo fun, pen and touch, but it turns out the touch bit really was unneeded extra cost. I never use it, lol... Works beautifully, though. Had it a couple years now.
|
I found the Wacom Bamboo Capture Graphics Tablet for $99 but I'm not sure it's the best so far...it does come with a variation of photoshop though...
|
Lol, I still don't know how to use my photoshop...
|
Lols...I'll probably stick with paint, but still...
|
Paint works perfectly well for those sorts of pixels, yeah. If you do decide you want to try Tris style, though, photoshop will really come in handy.
|
Well Mizzy's the one that brought that up...right now I'm just aiming for getting good enough to enter item contests...
I did have a random question...which direction is the light based with Tris items??? |
Generally, the top, far corner (far being the avi's right). This is pretty standard positioning for a lot of people. It can be kind of hard to see on some items.
|
Interesting...I wish I could do the pixel class...or at minimum sit in on it...but Oh wells...lols...
|
Fen does shading so fast, you might miss it even if you are watching.
|
Yeah I noticed last time I watched the live stream...
|
She's pretty much always quick as anything. Even when she's kind of distracted. It's amazing.
|
I will never be that good...although that would be really awesome if I were...
I'm really glad the lovely Twiggy is gonna help me some...she's working on a tutorial type thing to help me with shading and the such! |
I hope that she just so happens to use what she's supposed to be pixeling for me as examples.
... Because that would mean it's actually getting done. ...... Not that I would ever rush her... Nooo, of course not. |
