Windows 8

Comes out 10-26-12...

Who is ready for another round of Vista like problems?

Lunaryon 07-21-2012 03:40 PM

I'd just skip Windows 8. Since I think Widows 95, they've flip-flopped one is good, the next is horrid, then good, then horrid over and over again.

My husband got the beta of 8 and he likes it...
Minus the fact you don't have a start menu.
Other than that he loves it. Boots up way faster.
It will take awhile to figure out for sure but so
far what I've seen of 8 and tried the beta is that
it works fine. Just our usb drives won't work with
them. USB drives I mean external harddrives.

I have Windows Vista and I'm really getting that much problem

Lunaryon 07-22-2012 12:19 PM

Eh. I have a Mac, and now that I've got this, I only go back to Windows when I have programs that don't work on Mac.
And for that I have Bootcamp.

Demonskid 07-22-2012 12:50 PM

I just got a Win 7 PC.. i'm stucking with it too cause i don't have the money to upgrade 3<

littl3chocobo 07-22-2012 01:17 PM

windows 7 sucks balls and hard i so don't want 8 ;^; i want xp back honestly, at least i could navigate that one

Rosekitten 07-22-2012 04:26 PM

i had tried the windows 8 beta on my laptop, the menus and everything at the time seemed more set up for a tablet than a pc .. unless they changed it. I doubt i will be getting it for a while if at all xP I wasn't impressed by the beta granted it ran as smoothly as i could have wished.

Yokuutsu 07-30-2012 09:21 PM

Why can't they keep with something that's good? Windows 7 I like it. It took away the crappiness of Vista and added the goodness of XP

And now, it'll be back to the Vista problems D:

Espy 07-30-2012 10:27 PM

...There's. No. Start menu?

Yokuutsu 07-30-2012 10:31 PM

Yeah, and that's another reason I'll never move up to it.

Ducky 07-31-2012 02:44 AM

I thought the regular side to the OS was just like windows 7, start menu and all. With the option of switching to the tiles/touch interface.

I guess things have changed since i last looked into it D:

Kano is going to put the win 8 on a cd and test it when we get the new sata drive in, If they did in fact change the interface i'll be happy and gladly reslap it back on my laptop. It ran just fantastic when i had it but i couldn't get use to the interface Dx

Glass Heart 08-21-2012 07:10 PM

that's sort of what my boyfriend said
they seem to go through computers a good version and then a bad one

I was fine with vista though as long as it was on a computer that could actually run it
I remember when it first came out I was in a computer class and that was the only computer no one wanted to work on so I guess I had a soft spot for it
and my laptop was one, but it was a better computer than the school one and didn't have problems like the other one did

from what I heard though doesn't sound like 8 will be good for some computer gamers

Kloob 08-22-2012 06:23 PM

Perhaps 8 won't suck?

Sorry... that wasn't a serious statement! I'll just stick with my good 'ol Windows XP! Though, it is time to upgrade.

Edit: Just watched a release preview of 8... it looks interesting... I might just go to a electronic store once it comes and fiddle with it and see if I like it.

Where'd you get it from? ;-;

you should've gotten it from Office Depot, I know we were (or maybe still are) selling the windows 7 PCs still but if you WANT to upgrade to 8 when it comes out, you can for only 15$... >3< IDK if any other place is doing that, though.

Azrael 10-18-2012 04:37 AM

Also heard that a lot of media features won't be available for the regular windows 8... just if you upgrade to pro... then upgrade to pro+media pack. it's weird, and I don't quite understand what's going on. But yeah. x.x' I heard that...

Lauv Keiko 10-18-2012 11:40 AM

I don't even want this one... I still prefer Windows XP or Windows 7.

NeonSynth 10-18-2012 09:09 PM

after years of being on 7 its hard to go back to xp all of my fave commands are not there!!! And 8 is okay I willl keep with 7 for awihle any I read the Walmart is doing something if you buy a windows 7 laptop it is lik 15$ more to upgrade to 8

Alpha 10-18-2012 09:41 PM

I'm still on Vista with my desktop, but I've managed to work out the bugs that killed most people.7 is definitely good, and 8 looks like it is taking steps in a different direction.

Glitter 11-07-2012 11:59 PM

I had plans to get Windows 8 Pro, but now I am not so sure. But I want to try out Internet Explorer 10, but people who use Windows 7 have to wait. It seems like they are trying to standardize everything with the metro design, but I do like the design. But I remember with Windows XP and a Windows operating system before it, people could have an animated GIF as a background.

But I think you had to do a certain thing to get it to work on Windows XP; but the option is not available at all with Windows 7 and probably Windows 8 also.

Amoena 11-08-2012 12:16 AM

I want to put a windows 8 on another drive just to play with it, but I worry about the resource hogging. It's always been an issue with windows of course but from what I remember playing around with a pre-release of 8 it was so difficult turning off programs o.0! I'm sure I missed something telling you how to do it but I don't know.. pretty graphics are fun and all but if it messes with my Guild Wars (or more likely FFXIV) then I'll probably just leave it as a novelty.. like when I play around with different linux builds just 'cause xD

@Alpha I got a ton of kinks out of windows vista myself but due to self-ridicule (and like the third rootkit for simply being ON the internet) I upgraded to 7 asap. I can't live without my "snip" feature now! Ahh, the good old days of fixing all of my family members' vista machines.. not! :P

As an aside, I remember my dad putting on windows XP as an upgrade from windows 98 and I was so devastated because a ton of my games wouldn't work xD... I eventually got over that and enjoyed XP for a long time. I had it on an old box 'til my mother killed it (I can download FREEGAMEZPLUS, rite?)

Lioshika 11-16-2012 12:51 AM

I've heard a lot of bad with the Windows 8. I'm afraid that when I need a new computer, that's all they'll have. I saw parts of Windows 7, and kinda liked the idea, but I really don't care for 8.

If they don't bring back the whole start menu, desktop and everything, I may be going to Apple's computers.

Alpha 11-16-2012 01:01 PM

Eh, I'm intrigued by it. Reviews so far have been good with what I've seen, but shift to similar system as OS X has been biggest critique so far. I don't mind though, especially since I currently use a Mac.

Slylord 11-16-2012 04:40 PM

I plan on getting a Mac, actually. It's supposed to be more artist friendly then the PC.

I'll probably upgrade this computer though.

John Watson 11-24-2012 02:14 AM

The lack of a start menu is pretty much a deal breaker for me. A friend of mine was playing around with the beta of it, and it looked awful to me. I'll definitely skip it, and since I have 7 right now, I can pretty much hold out for quite a while if they keep up with the crap setup. It definitely looked more designed for tablets, and I really have no desire for a tablet.

Sadly, I can't ever go to a mac either. I hate them, because they're ridiculously priced. Plus I'm a gamer, and I like my PC to remain capable of playing games. Macs are not good for gamers.

Coda 11-24-2012 03:02 AM

I agree with every point you made except "Macs are not good for gamers." The fact is they're just as good at running games as a PC; it's just that a lot of game developers are lazy and don't release for Mac. But a lot DO -- Valve and Blizzard ship cross-platform, for example.

It's the attitude that "Macs aren't good for gamers" that MAKES Macs not good for gamers. If fewer people said that, more developers would find it worth shipping for Mac.

pachi 11-24-2012 04:45 PM

erg, saw a couple of them up for trial at the mall yesterday, tried them and didn't really like it.

lolol I'm still on windows XP.

Regardless of the reasons, that still means that if you want to primarily run games, PCs are a better choice. Just like if you want to play a mario game, the Wii (or Wii U, now) is your best choice for console. It's not that the other consoles can't run it, but they just don't make them for other consoles, so they're not good for it.

Anyway, I don't know how customizable macs are, if it's easy to just alter pieces of hardware or not. If it's not, then I would argue that there is another way a PC would be better. As games increase in requirements, you will inevitably need to upgrade. With my PC, I can easily just upgrade, say, my video card, and spend like 100 bucks, versus having to buy a whole new mac at like a thousand bucks. But again, I don't know if you can easily change hardware on a mac. If you can, this point is not really valid.

But, what it really comes down to for me, above all else, is price. I think macs are just seriously overpriced. And even if macs can run games just as well, that's still just as well for twice the money. Therefore, PC > Mac in that case, because spending extra money for an apple symbol on your computer is silly.

Coda 11-24-2012 09:42 PM

The fact that PCs NEED to be able to upgrade hardware like that is itself an issue. You can upgrade the RAM and the hard drive, and that's all that really matters for the most part. My old MacBook was still cranking after four years and I was still able to play games just fine. (Yeah, I had to turn the graphics settings down, but still.) I only had to replace it because it finally gave out after I physically broke it when it fell out of my bag and onto the ground at the corner -- snapped the hinge on one side and KEPT WORKING for over a year before it just wore out completely.

They're not "seriously" overpriced, just expensive. The build quality is better than any PC you will ever lay your hands on and the system as a whole is built to "just work" -- unlike a PC that always needs tuning and configuring and drivers. Total cost of ownership of a Mac over its lifespan after taking into account caring for the system and including at least one OS upgrade really isn't that much higher than a PC. You're not just spending the money on the brand name. (If you want to spend money on a brand name, go look at Alienware.)

Anyway, I'm not criticizing your conclusion -- you're right to buy a PC if it runs the software you want it to run. What I'm criticizing is your criticism: blanket statements like that don't help anything get better.

Ducky 11-24-2012 11:09 PM

As someone who loves to tinker with hardware and software, and play a lot of games I would never consider buying a Mac. I wouldn't go as far as to hate them though. just the same as i prefer android over iOS. I'll happily admit iOS is technically the better OS, but will always stick with Android.

Alpha 11-24-2012 11:50 PM

I've played with Windows 8 some, and it seems like a pretty smooth interface, just definitely a major change for Windows. It takes some ideas that Apple's OS X uses while still retaining a Windows-y feel and take on them. Overall, might consider it once my school gets licenses for it as an upgrade to my current OS on the PC I have now......granted I'll have to overhaul the PC first.

Tiva 11-24-2012 11:56 PM

My Mom got the choice to upgrade to 8 after 3 months of having her laptop... she says she wont because it is too different... though she does like the Mac interface alot.

Demagische 11-25-2012 12:41 PM

I've got Windows 7 on my laptop at the moment with no intent on upgrading to 8 for a while. Not until the bugs and such are sorted out.

silverygit 01-03-2013 11:12 PM

My brother, who's a computer genius hates Windows 8. Not only is it problematic when it comes to turning it off completely, but the interface is of a damn smart phone which none of us use in this family.
To me it is another vista: a complete failure, while windows 7 is just fine and less problematic.

hyjin 01-06-2013 11:32 PM

yeah... my friend got a new laptop with windows 8 and im like... yeah ill stick with 7 thank you... bc the tiles wanted me to throw it out the window...

Coda 01-06-2013 11:59 PM

The tiles can be turned off. Don't let THAT be a reason to hate on it. There are plenty of other far more legitimate things to complain about.

Alpha 01-07-2013 12:22 AM

It looks like an interesting way for Microsoft to have taken Windows.....though I'll stick with my Mac as my main computer still. I'm still waiting for it to settle and have a lot of the bugs and problems to be addressed/fixed before I consider upgrading to it when it comes to my Windows computer (that I keep for programs that require and OS other than Mac OS X to run).

Lucid: 01-07-2013 01:54 PM

My mother in law just got a windows 8 computer and I honestly don't think it's that bad. Hers isn't a touch screen, which I think is its weakness. The tiles feel awkward when they have to be controlled via mouse, but the touchscreen feels nice and works well. The tiles are easy to use and pretty convenient. Once you take a little time to get used to the new controls, it's a decent system. I would get it if I needed a new computer, but I don't right now. If I got one, I would be sure to get a touch screen.

Coda 01-07-2013 03:37 PM

It's fine if you're using your computer like a tablet.

If you want to use your computer like people have been using computers for the last 20 years (literally 20, Windows 3.1 was released in late 1992), it doesn't work. And if you want to use apps that aren't Win8-specific, you have to go into desktop mode ANYWAY.

And Win8's desktop mode has problems.
