why did.this have to.happen???
 

So today I was woken up by a cop and detective because my brother had accidentally bought a stolen laptop. Now he might get charged with theft and such and he wanted to join the military so if that happens that goes down the toilet. My mom and eldest brother are freaking out and yelling and now my brother just left because of their reaction. I tried to be supportive and tried talking to him about it but my eldest brother started laughing hysterically saying "this doesn't just affect you it affects us all." That is true but he didn't have to laugh.

I don't know what to do. I am afraid for my brother and what will happen. They told him he could take this 6 month course that's kinda like community service and it will be dropped but should he even be charged? Its pretty unfair to me. Plus he might not even be able to do the program because your name has to be put in and picked (effect..) but the cop did like him and such

Idk... I'm just really stressed about this. I don't want my brother to be charged with something he didn't do.

Also now my brother may get kicked out of the house because of my dads work (hard to explain)

If it can be proven that he didn't know it was stolen he should be fine. Also if he is under 18 the record would be wiped clean so he could join the Military.
Your family has right to freak out and be upset, but they really shouldn't take it out on you.

You need to go to the lot of them, and slap them each once on the face. It sounds like they are acting histarical, and they need to be shaken out of it.

If he didn't know it was stolen I'm pretty sure they will have to drop the charge.

this just really sucks. Hes gone now and I fear when my dad comes home because hes going to yell and its going to be scary...

But like others have said, since he never knew it was a stolen laptop, he should be fine and the charges be dropped.

he came back home because the detective called then had to go to work...
apparently he will be charged for sure. No way around it. But he still has the chance of the program.

Possession is nine-tenths of the law. And you should tell him that he should buy from a store and not someone he knows. People cannot be trusted. I know that because one of my friends stole over 800 dollars worth of my shit.

Before I figured out who it was. Then I ditched him.

Though it isn't really his fault. Did he tell the cops who he bought the laptop from? They could possibly get his money and he could give them the laptop and no one loses except the people stealing.
