I pick my skin...
Its a form of OCD in some cases and just a compulsion in other cases.
http://www.skinpick.com/ has some graphs showing who/how many are effected and it has 3% had it in the past.. and only 1% stopped and succeeded... http://www.skinpick.com/dermatillomania-statistics I have been doing this ever since I can remember and my mom did it as well.. I mainly pick around my nails and finger tips.. When I am under alot of stress I kind of zone out and just pick alot then realize later how much I picked.. I don't have cuticles.. It bugs the crap out of me to see skin on my nails.. So what are your bad habits or "disorders"? |
I have a habit to pick the skin off of my lips when I'm nervous or Bored.
|
I do that too..lol.
|
I'm not the only one!
|
I've been known to pick at my lips and I sometimes pick at my skin, and now have scars from it. I cant' just leave them alone either =/ I tried putting bandaids on. Woke up with the bandaids off and a fresh scab.
|
I tend to pick at stuff too...I try not to but I seem to unconsciously do it whenever I'm bored. I pick at scabs and my lips, and the skin around my nails too, much as I wish I'd stop that.
|
Serra; it's embarrassing but I do that too. I try to not do the scabs at work because the blood and then the issue of what is around work that could get into the wound and potentially infect it. I've had that happen a few times. So I try to make sure to be careful about those kind of things.
Some I do unconsciously. |
yeah i pick at my fingers, chew my nails, and bite the inside of my mouth :P
|
it could for some of you actually be hyper-grooming not ocd though there is not much of a difference other than one only has those symptoms and the other is part of a bigger /deeper/ problem
and wtf is a cuticle X''D i have physically ripped the whole thing out before if i have forgotten it though typing a lot makes me less prone to biting my nails though i was offline for half of the day and bit one to the flesh and the other i have exposed nail bed >_o i forgot how much that shit hurt but a +300 page novel left me with a free hand this is /not/ my hand though at the worst of my biting i got about halfway to this point; http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._thumbnail.JPG |
mines never gone as bad as that pic either choco ><
yeah its usually my mouth when im stressed and my fingers when im bored or hungry |
i can dig out about half my nail before i get to leave it alone, it sucks ^^;
|
The cuticle is the little bit of skin that covers the base of your nail.
I do this too. I'll pick at sores without even realizing I'm doing it. I'll sometimes nibble on the skin on my lips or at the edges of my fingertips (like at the corners of the nail or under the edge of the nail). It's not TOO bad for me, though, almost certainly not at the "mania" level -- for example, if I DON'T have any sores, I won't mess with them. |
i was being fastidious sweetie
|
I should take picks of my hands... some times its bad but then other times it mild. Next week at work is going to be a very stressful week so I am pretty sure my fingers will look bad...lol.
When I worked in fast food I hated having my hands in water for long points of time cuz it would cause the edges of skin where I stopped picking to show up.. |
I tend to pick at my lips whenever they get dry, to the point where they hurt. And I also tend to pick at my skin whenever a circle of dead skin pops up, or the skin underneath my nails in general.. I never noticed how frequent I picked until I stopped to think about it.
|
I don't have a disorder, but I have this urge to pull out my hair one by one when I'm under stress. Sometimes, compulsive smoking.
|
Trichotillomania is the name for compulsively pulling out hair. I, too, will do that under stress sometimes, or when I have too much energy and can't hold still.
|
@Coda: yup, that's the name. However that disorder would cause baldnes... D: my hair is thinning now...;w;

It's a REALLY bad habit xD I try to break it but i just.. keep doing it ><
|
When I feel an urge to pick at my lips, I try to put on chapstick instead if it's available. I keep medicated chapstick lying around the house so they can heal faster if I pick at them too much and make them sore and/or bloody.
You can condition yourself out of pretty much any bad habit. |
xD i don't have the help/support i need to condition myself out .. its such and unconsious action xp
|
Habits are harder to break than actions because they are unconscious. But if I can condition myself to have frequent lucid dreams, I think you could condition yourself to avoid picking at your lips. ^^ I'd start with keeping a lip balm handy. You can even start to obsessively apply it, replacing the lip-picking habit with a chapstick-applying habit. At least you won't be hurting yourself any more. :/
|
I do xD I still pick at them with the stuff on. it doesn't matter if its cracked lips or soft good skin lips xD
|
Hmmm. Wear mittens? :P
|
I pick at my scalp.
I have many scabs cause of it. And i bite my nails. To the point where they bleed, or come close to it. |
•:*´¨`*:•. —¤÷(`[¤* *¤]´)÷¤— •:*´¨`*:•. ❀ I started compulsive smoking since my dad died when I am totally stressed out. And I always have picked at my scabs, something I am really embarrassed about since it leaves so many scars on my legs from me being a klutz. I have stopped picking at scabs, it was hard to do though. ( ゚ Д゚) ❂ •:*´¨`*:•. —¤÷(`[¤* *¤]´)÷¤— •:*´¨`*:•. |
I like to pick at sores that come from minor scratches, because looking at it annoys me.
|
I bite the insides of my cheeks and lips to the point of them hurting, and I play with my hair to the point of both of my arms being sore. I have no idea why I do it. I just enjoy the feeling of every individual strand being run through my fingers, and if a hair is scraggly I'll try my best to unscraggle it xD
|
I pick at my fingers and sometimes my toes. pfff-
Tried to cut down over the years with...... little success. |
I bite individual taste buds off of my tongue when I'm not paying attention, I'll also pick at my tongue with my fingernails. I chew on my cheeks as well. . - . |
I pick at my skin all the time, even when there is nothing on it to pick at. My legs have little scabs from where I've picked at spots so bad; I guess I've always done it but it's gotten worse over the years.
I also chew on either my lower lip or the insides of my cheeks whenever I get nervous or feel stressed out, and when I get really frustrated I'll pull on my hair and get strains of hair out. |
I have a horrible habit of picking/biting my nails until their just stubs/nubs. It's really irritating and I can't stop. I've tried to put a rubber band on my wrist and every time I get the urge I snap the band on my skin. That worked for a little while, then when finals came around I got stressed out and started again.
Hopefully I can kick it! |
