There are a few free items in the shops that will get you started on your avatar, check in Body Shop for facial features, the Salon for hair, and Threads for some clothes.

Lots of things in all the shops, of course, but that's where the free stuff is!

The only question I have is, how do I get my skin/body to show?

See where it says "Male" and "Female" in the editor? Click one, then you can pick a skin color. :)
