Battling?

I don't understand how to initiate battle...
None of this makes sense. D:
Can someone help me?
How do you get those red orb things? ;-;

When you click on the "Join the Fight" button at the bottom of the screen, you get taken to the battle page. If it doesn't immediately throw you into a battle, just wait for a little while and it will put you into a battle automatically. The most you'll ever have to wait is 5 minutes, at which point you will battle an NPC.
You get the jewels by winning your battles.
