It's eating my CPU and RAM!

So something is eating my CPU and RAM (more so the CPU)

And for some reason every time I open task manager...it read as 90% CPU usage....is this normal?

I have no clue what could be eating it. I have the newest version of Firefox installed...and I use trillian. That's all that is opened to my knowledge, but my CPU does hit 50% or higher which isn't normal.

Serra Britt 09-30-2011 11:16 PM

That used to happen to me too. Took me forever to find out it was some download manager thing that installed when I downloaded a Free to Play game. Specifically Dynasty Warriors Online.

Anyways, have you installed anything recently?

Yokuutsu 09-30-2011 11:26 PM

Other than the upgrade to the new version of chrome? And Microsoft Office 2010 in August? Not that I know of, but I don't trust my mother to not mess with my things.

But I think that's it other than various updates to Windows, Firefox, and AVG.

Serra Britt 09-30-2011 11:32 PM

None of those should be doing it. To fix mine I ended up having to have the program manager (the one you get when you do ctrl-alt-del) open all the time, with the performance manager part open, and I kept looking to see WHAT programs were using the most CPU and RAM time.

Yokuutsu 09-30-2011 11:41 PM

How much CPU should the average browser take up? Obviously less than what my CPU is at, but what is normal? Same goes for RAM usage. Do you know?

Firefox...is using 45% (at times) of my CPU without the plugin container. That's just with me scrolling on a page.

Serra Britt 09-30-2011 11:54 PM

It depends on the processor but ... (checks) wow somehow mine is using 5% while my MSN messenger is using 50%. That's...strange.

45% isn't that bad as long as nothing else is trying to use it too. It seems high to me but looking at this I don't even know why my Messenger, which isn't doing anything, is using so much of my CPU.

Yokuutsu 09-30-2011 11:57 PM

Well, I think it's strange that anything...other than maybe games....would use over 30 percent. Since three things running....and your computer will freeze up and all that.

And I can't find anywhere that says what the average is....but I think 40 is a little high when I'm just scrolling on a webpage.

And then add in the plug in container...and I could easily hit 100%

Are you using the name messengers? Like YIM MSN and AIM? If so....why not try trillian...I've never even seen it hit 10% CPU and it runs multiple messengers at the same time-I have all three of those running at one time on it and have had more running at one time.

Serra Britt 10-01-2011 12:12 AM

No, I'm using emesene, and it's very rare for it to be doing that. Strange even because it has no ads and I'm not even talking to anyone.

Yes, for a non-game to be that high I don't understand it at all.

Yokuutsu 10-01-2011 12:14 AM

I've never heard of that, but if it continues to do so....you might wanna try trillian? If you don't like it (if you try it) you can always uninstall it.

I'm posting on the firefox website about it, but I doubt anything will be done for a long time. But now I know it's firefox for sure.

Serra Britt 10-01-2011 12:24 AM

I had trillian for a while and it's not bad at all. This one rarely gives me issues, I'm kind of suspecting my Task Manager doesn't know what it's talking about. When I found my other problem it usually thought something else was taking up all the CPU use.

Lioshika 10-01-2011 10:03 PM

I'm not sure. My CPU usage is between 7 and 54. It seems to stay more between 10-28 though. So I'm not sure. My memory is staying at flat line. But who knows. I'm not good with these things. I also have MSN, AIM, and three tabs on Firefox running, Norton, plus the side toolbar.

Yokuutsu 10-01-2011 10:21 PM

I have a few tabs open, but I've always had that many open with out it eating CPU...and I have trillian which eats up to a max of 2% cpu so far. Firefox is eating up to 60% now....which it does vary from 20 something to 50 something...more towards the 50. I have AVG running which eats no CPU unless I open it to decide to scan or not...and then if I do scan. IT isn't open. And I have no toolbars.

Alpha 11-28-2011 11:25 PM

I run Safari and it doesn't eat up that much. Skype takes up about 8% for me . Although granted my processor is fairly new, so that may be why...

Tiva 11-28-2011 11:42 PM

Disable your cookies and scan your computer extremely well, it sounds like you have ad ware and or a tracker.

Alpha 11-28-2011 11:46 PM

Actually, yeah, that sounds about like what it may be. May also be something more malicious. One of my comps was infested with a pretty nasty trojan for a while until I updated my virus software, disconnected it from the internet, and scanned it to hell.

Yokuutsu 11-29-2011 02:00 AM

It wasn't adware. Google Chrome never runs that high...which is what I'm using now. It only runs somewhere near that if facebook/youtube is open...on Gaia depending.

My CPU usage rarely goes to 20% long as I don't run youtube or gaia
