I could have sworn that I had sold a few shop items to get myself a Snail Whisperer, I know this because I was broke after I bought it and waiting on a COD to finish so I could get a second. But here I am with nearly 4k ( after the trade ) and no Snail. o Ao

Or maybe I'm just going insane and I never bought one?

According to your transaction history, you never bought one. You can see your purchase history using the "View Completed Transactions" link on the shops page.

I've been a little loopy recently must have been thinking of getting one when the item sold and mixed everything up in my mind. xD
