The night was cold and overcast. No stars were visible and the dark clouds threatened to spill over at any moment. It was getting late but a majority of the residential buildings still had lights on. There are always people awake in a big city. Some of the population were just waking; others had been up for a few hours already. One of those was a seemingly young man who went by the alias “Vladimir”. Rather arrogant of himself to chose the name of the most famous vampire in literary history. This summed the vampire up pretty well, really. That’s why he chose the name. Perfectly suited they were to each other.

Vladimir wasn’t one to let his talents go to waste. If he wasn’t out seducing the young and impressionable in bars and clubs, he was out hunting a different type of game. Being labelled a traitor to his kind didn’t bother him in the slightest. The work paid well and he got to satiate his desires for destruction and blood on a fairly regular basis without getting on the radar of the local law. He was a vampire hunter, and a ruthless one at that. It wasn’t that he hated what he’d become. Oh no, in fact he still revelled in the animalistic nature that had been bestowed upon him. He hated what it did to others. New blood didn’t understand the gift the way he did. They got too big for their boots and he enjoyed taking them down a peg or two.

Today’s hit was supposed to be easy. “Routine” his source had called it. A small group were out to make a name for themselves, reckoning they were the next big thing to sweep through the city. He was to send a message. Kill the leader. Half the money upfront. Half the money when the gang split up or split town. He could have just taken the first half, it was rather substantial, but greed is a sin all but the highest of men give in to.
