I've never cared for child protagonists, even in my own childhood.

Quite honestly, I think "characters you can relate to" are overrated as a rule.

I'll admit my mind tends to make such characters automatically in their 20's - a 14-year-old killing man-sized rats in a barbarian rage is a bit ridiculous.

Come to think of it, many of the things I read/played/saw that involved more than 1 world started as "pest control" plots leading to a "Wardrobe transition" to the other world...
...and yet there is no trope for that...

I was thinking more of how most Dungeons and Dragons type games have you spend your first character level killing rats in the cellar of the tavern. Glorious business.
