Salone, you're young enough to have escaped being raised that way. ml, it's not so much Americans in general as it is socially-conservative (independent of fiscal or political views) Americans over the age of 40 or so, with the specifics of the age range varying by region. (Alaska, for what it's worth, is actually a lot more like the south than people think; it attracts the same kind of people who would live on ten acres of land in an area loosely called a "city" than in an actual city.)
It's a culture of resistance to change. The way they know is the way things ought to be. If it's different from that, it's wrong.
Fortunately, social connectivity in the 80s and later has meant that my generation has started moving away from that legacy, and the generations after me moreso.
