You can subscribe to threads at the thread tools and then, in your user CP, you see when new posts come in the thread. C:

I have no problem with checking the activity threads. I kept looking for new posts or go on the front of the page.

Sadrain: Yeah, but when you subscribe, you're bombarded with a whole bunch of e-mails to tell you each time it's updated. I mean, who uses e-mail to keep tabs on things like that anymore?

That, and I meant something more like what a different site has. They've got a little bar that shows up the moment a new post has been made on the bottom of the page, and when you click it, all new posts are appended to the bottom of the page. If you're looking in another tab, that's ok, because the moment the little bar shows up, a number appears in parenthesis in front of the name of the thread in its tab, the number designating how many new posts have happened while you were away.
