Do they have to be human-ish? If they don't, you could do....eh, say, Cu Sith or Cait Sith, although the latter has been used and recycled too often in the FF games.

Another rarely used and often animalistic race are potentially the Raksha, often depicted as demonic half-cat, half human hybrids and based off the mythical monsters of Arabic regions. They're versatile when it comes to writing for your own depictions of them.

You often see a lot of Neko-type races in anime, but the Raksha have a deeper and often darker history involved with them.

That is very intereting. alot are commonly used. I mean ou could do the book on a commonly used one and just add some interesting twists to it.
