Actually, "voda" is Russian for "water." (I'm not 100% sure on the spelling. I have a friend from Russia, but I've never seen him WRITE in Russian, and I can't read Cyrillic anyway.) "Vodka" is a diminutive of that; if it were Japanese you'd be looking at "water-chan" meaning "hard liquor."
