Anime is regulated to its origins in Sushiland, but the word itself derives from the french l'animé, the accent specifying that the E at the end is not silent. And since its japanese, they have a habit of adopting words from other languages and creating their own version of it.

@Coro- .... Actually, it's derived from the word 'animation' or アニメーション (a-ni-me-e-sh-o-n) in Japanese, but they shortened it to 'anime' or アニメ (a-ni-me) sometime in the 70's. And yes, while the term 'anime' in English usually refers to Japanese animation, in Japanese it refers to any animation (it's just an abbreviated form of the word).
