Sad that it stopped showing also.

It does seem like shows were much darker then today. As well as music and movies. I haven't had cable since I was a young teenager, so I randomly turned on cartoon network the other day at a friends house. I was shocked at how much it had changed, and a little disappointed :x

Well my view on it was that when we were kids we could grasp the darker side of the shows more than today's children. If we showed today's kids the older cartoons they would be scared and parents would have fits over the fact that a show scared their child.

The world is dark and [to me] a scary place to live and parents say that the world is all like comedies and sesame street and unicorns going to candy mountain and farts rainbows and such; so they get their kids to watch shows that make them happy not terrified.

Onto a whole other factor, when I was a kid, TV was my parent, no one told what I should and shouldn't watch cause later on I'll watch it anyway (or the fact don't want to be a part in my life) . Today, parents are more active in what their kids should watch, they have now netflix, TiVo, parental control settings, etc. If their was something on it didn't have a control block on it or a "like you like this, then we reccomend this:".

I'll make an example in 'Chef Goes Nanners' when there was debate on whether or not the South Park Flag has to change in order to make it less racist. Kyle and Stan had no idea that it was considered racist, they thought that it was a flag of 5 people. I'n the end Chef realized that the reason why Kyle and Stan say that the flag shouldn't changed because they just thought that it was just 5 people (4 whites and 1 black) unless someone pointed it out.

In another words, we didn't know that it was dark when we were kids unless the parents watched it with them or the parents watched it themselves, then the parents would point out to the children that it's a dark show and you shouldn't watch it.

Don't flame on me for this cause this is what I think why they aren't any darker series like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sailor Moon (some episodes were dark), Ah, Real Mosters, etc.

It was after shows like Ren and Stimpy when parents starting getting super controlling on what kids "should" and "shouldn't" see. Can't show a villain with a cigar, or it will encourage kids to smoke! Even though they're... the villain, and... obviously bad. And god forbid someone gets a nose bleed or says the word "dead", just in case kids might explode with violence upon impact.

While children certainly shouldn't be exposed to EVERYTHING a teenage or adult oriented show might present, kids can handle a lot more than we give them credit for.

I think it's getting a bit better though, it's just going to be a slow process.

all about censoring these days. why shows like South park and lol the Simpsons were always threatened to be canceled due to the content being "questionable". Sadly we have parents today who were not ready to be parents and their quick fast solution to helping their already stressed out lives deal with their children- thrown on the TV. On one hand this is a good thing, the "fluffy rainbow farting" cartoons. I do think there is a bit of desensitization but also lack of interest in the child you're raising.... Only my opinion and not every family!

Since incidents like Columbine Highschool in colorado where the shooter's parents blamed TV and video games I believe the industry has been doing their best to make things.... less dark. So the slap stick humor of yesterday? Is now the rose smelling and sneezing humor of today.

Honestly when I was a kid, I HATED Anime. It scared me and was so violent and terrifying. I grew up some and now Berserk-which is awesomely violent- is my favorite anime. I think there is some good to the new fluffy stuff.....even though it's not entertaining in the least for me.

Parents need to stop expecting television to raise their kids for them. While I completely understand needing some time to yourself and, say, plopping your kids in front of the TV for a movie or two to distract them for a while, it's still expected that the parent be involved with their child's learning and upbringing. That includes knowing how much TV your kids can watch, and when they can watch it. If you don't think a particular show is good for your child, make sure they're doing something else during its time slot. Also, rather than sending angry letters to Cartoon Network for every mild fight scene when your kids start arguing, go directly to your children and tell them yourselves why you think fighting is wrong and instill other methods of dealing with tough situations. (Sibling rivalry is something that can never be conquered even in the best of kids, but it can be moderated.)

Once they come into their teen years, they should be learning by then how to separate fictional behavior with real behavior. Shielding them from sex and violence isn't going to teach them how to handle it, it's just going to leave you with an ignorant teenager who'll be guideless when he has to figure these things out for his or herself.

At least, that's what I think, while I have admittedly never raised kids, nor plan to, so I can't claim to be an expert on the subject. I just know from my experience BEING a kid, and how I learned basic things like not to hit, not to judge others, ect.

As for the sex hing talk to your kids about it, cause if they're not to learn it from you then where else, the media. And if they watch the New 90210, Gossip Girl, Jersey Shores, etc. then they would think that's normal and that's how they should behave sexually.

Teach your children about naughty thing when there young, when there brains are developing. Such as teaching your toddler or a 5 year old the difference between good touch and bad touch.

If you just depend on the schools to teach them about sex then it's basically denying of your child's common knowledge and common sense. Maybe later on in their teens or puberty years, tell you children about sexuality and masturation and such.

Well, I was talking more on the violence aspect on it, but you make a good point to. We definitely pulled away from the cartoon topic though.

MMMMMMMMM, anybody else find the art changes in the Tom and Jerry series interesting? It happened in the beginning and then pretty much any time a new team started making episodes again.

I liked Batman TAS... man was that dark. This new 'The Batman' seems all kiddy in comparison.
Then again I do love the original Batman with Adam West... before my time but I still like it. It's quite funny.
Like the black and white Tarzan movies. They were so pathetic they were hilarious

In America, we've been putting more restrictions on sex than violence because it can be shown in many ways (or because of the conservatives religious people), violence is very flexible and varied and can be gruesome.

In Europe, it's the other way around when they restricted violence (because of agressive behaviors that can be taught to a child/person) and they let loose on sexuality because sex is part of life and everyone's going to go through it at some point in their lives, hell kids have experienced them (except the nuns and people that are tied to the church).

Ditto! Where's Codelyoko? Where's my Reboot?! Where's the freakin Tenchi and YuYu Hakushow?! I want all the cool stuff back! At this day and age the cartoon universe WILL rot your brain. The stuff that we used to watch actually had a storyline and understandable life lessons. Geez...I'd even watch Carebears rather than Chowder or Adventure Time...

Ugh all of these live action shows are whats keeping me from watching television. I've pretty much given up on tv and if I want to watch an old cartoon I'd catch it on youtube.

I miss the old cartoons, even though I used to hate them when I was all in my pure weaboo phase.. even catdog was so so much better than the stuff nowadays D:

@Lucifer: Catdog <3 I miss that show too. I always wondered how the show would've went on if dog actually started going out with that little poodle shriek. I'm gonna be honest though she had one nasty attitude. I guess thats the typical poodle XP.

Except the conga line poodles (look em up they seem cool xD).

I really miss.. Kid's Next Door, any anime from before 2004/5, Code Lyoko (That show was amazing), and pretty much every cartoon I used to scoff at :C (I never scoffed at anime though xD)
