OBK; The booklet won't help you for shit. I can promise you that. Maybe I'm biased because I can't use anything but CS anymore. All other programs make me go durpy and angry at the world. If I wanted a certain effect I'd just look up tutorials, tho for the most part I just draw. (And I dunno if you're working with a tablet pen or not. And I didn't know CS had a pen tool. We have a customizable brush and then a pencil.
