Black licorice is flavored with anise, which has a complex flavor that isn't really similar to anything else. It's definitely a like-it-or-don't kind of flavor, and it's not really compatible with the sweet-tooth expectations of today's kids, but enough people still like it despite its reputation that companies still manufacture it.

I like anise, and some things like Ouzo to a point, but have never been fond of the candies. I've tried a salt licorice fish (candy) at one point. Couldn't do it.
