I think the equivalent would be like Memorial Day or Veteran's Day, maybe? It started with the end of WW2 and is all about remembering the fallen soldiers and such that fought in the World Wars, and has since then expanded to cover remembrance in general. The poppy might be a Commonwealth thing, comes from the poppies that would grow around graves and on the battlefields.
