they actually can, many even emit chemical distress signals when they or a nearby plant of the same species is cut. this is something we have known for close to 70 years
Default #594
uh, no, they cannot. Plants don't have a nervous system; they can't feel anything, let alone pain. Emitting chemical signals is hardly the same thing.

...sigh...
Conflict of moral ideals here. Can't agree with chocobo.
I can agree that there are better means - I can't that those means are in artificial trees.

Galla's argument I can understand more.

many creatures lack nerves and can still not only feel pain but react to pain stimulus. you seriously need to pick up a book(i assume you are a kid though, this is stuff they teach in highschool)

i like the idea of either getting rid of the tree(which would also reduce the plastic production in ornamentation) or encourage, like you said, natural tree use(though in the form of potted plants since many persons have no yards or houses)
AH MAH GAWD IT'S THE WORD! YAY!

but more seriously, whether or not plants perceive pain is actually a serious debate that's having a lot of scientific testing done for years now. Plants of all sorts are already known to be reactive and intelligent. The idea that only things with identifiable brains can be in pain (or insert any other sensation/emotion of your choice) is one of the things that keeps people from accepting the possibility.

My thoughts on the matter: just because it doesn't work the way we do doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Default #598
because i am for not having trees or because i am encouraging the use of potted plants instead of cutting trees?
Default #599
I'd rather have a fake tree and not have to deal with the sap... not to mention finding needles for WEEKS after it gets tossed to the curb. I have a little white fake tree that takes a couple minutes, tops, to get set up and situated, because it's one of those pre-lit ones. We have two cats here, and a black thumb who manages to kill pretty much any plant in a pot or have it be brought to a sorry state within weeks, despite doing her best to take care of it (Love mom, but really, it's a miracle we have any potted plants inside the house.), so an artificial tree's the best solution for our family.

wow, galla was not kidding about the complaining thing XD

but yeah, though to be fair there have also been studies done that creatures that previously were thought to feel pain do not, creatures like butterflies do not feel pain while grass feels it acutely. nature is seriously crazy XD

uh, actually I'm a college student going into nursing. I've taken plenty of biology and chemistry to know a thing or two about what I'm talking about. Trees and all plants lack the ability to process pain, even if they are able to respond to environmental stimuli.

unless you can find a reputable, peer-reviewed study published in a scholarly journal, telling me to "pick up a book" is hardly going to support your point.

my feelings on fake trees is mixed X_____x on the one hand they can be used for many years consecutively but on the other the bulk are made of plastic which is not biodegradable and kills so many creatures both directly and indirectly

...All I'mma say is this. It's all well and good to want to protect life, but at the same time, dirt doesn't digest well, so I'm gonna be over in my corner of the 'net, enjoying a *bleeping* cheeseburger with tomatoes and lettuce.

lol den, i don't particularly care what gets eaten so long as eating it won't wipe out the entire species, and people respect that it was alive. it's not cool to abuse people, animals, or plants.

Sorry, Den.

what studies? many plants have the same neurochemicals that animals use and use them in similar ways under the same stimuli and on top of that when damaged many send out chemical distressors that either cause neighboring plants to put out defenses or call other animals(primarily ants, beetles and the like) to their aid

here, get started with wiki;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plant_...8physiology%29

if you are capable of reading that then maybe i can upgrade you to actual books on the subject, there are many >x>

galla, the next time i get the word give it to the post below me, ok?

Same here, Galla. There's a difference between doing things in a sustainable way and just destroying it all and letting the Powers That Be sort it out in the end. I'm also kinda cranky right now, and feeling like a bitchy old lady.

Yay for Law! Ketchup goes good on burgers, imo. On top of an egg over medium so it's not too runny, but not fried all the way through...

Chocobo, you do realize anyone who can make an account can edit a wikipedia page, correct?
