so i have a question:

here’s the set-up: older daughter - J - (she’ll be 19 in a little more than two months) is home for the summer. she’s volunteering with a community theatre group, and tonight was the closing show. after the show, they broke down the set, and then headed out for a cast party. not that long ago, hubby said he was thinking of going to bed, and i said i’ll probably stay up. he said something like ‘she’s (J) a big girl, she doesn’t need her mother to wait up for her’ and then said i was turning into my mom (it was actually my dad who would wait up for me, so i mentioned that.) and then i said there’s nothing wrong with me waiting up for someone who’s expected home late.

but i got to wondering: it’s not just me that waits up for your (adult) child if they’re living at home and they’re going to be home late… is it?

I would do it for anyone living in my house personally so no I don't think it's weird lol

if younger daughter (15) was out and getting dropped off, i'd still wait up too.

thanks. and i agree, it is! hubby's all 'she's over 18, she's an adult now' and sometimes i take that to mean he's all done with her. but i'm always going to be her mother and if her 'home base' is home, then i'll probably wait up for her.

on the other hand, it's after 2 a.m. here, and i may call it a night in about an hour if she's not home yet though.

My mom used to wait up when i turned 21 and hadn't moved out yet. she got upset when i didn't come home at a reasonable time and set a curfew of 10pm. I was so upset I moved out two days later >.>

it's not that i was upset - i knew she didn't really know what time she'd be home and would text when she was leaving. i was just wondering if it was just me that would wait up.

in the end, i got ready for bed, she texted when she was leaving, and i was still up when she came home.

on the other hand, i always had a midnight curfew until i got married and moved out. i hated the midnight curfew because i'd even said i'd be home by 1 a.m... and they still never changed it though.

My mom doesn't need to set curfews..because we live in an apartment and everyone knows that everyone at home will go to sleep. And then if my sister or I stay out too long we'll be locked out >.>

well that makes sense, Potironette. i gave up on the kids having a bed time years ago, and i probably never set a curfew because i know they'll be responsible to be home. and as i told older daughter last night, as long as she knows herself and her limits for staying up and not driving while too tired.

Eheh ^^' my mom gave up on enforcing bed-time around the end of middle school because of how bad I was at finishing homework on time. As for going outside, I think my mom might actually want me to leave home more since I stay indoors too much.

yeah, i gave up when younger daughter was in about 6th grade or so. i just couldn't be bothered any more. XD

my kids aren't really outside type people, so, eh, i'm ok with them not going.

i did not need a curfew XD i was a homebody, haha

i was too... until i lived on campus in college.

i was as well . .. until i got a boyfriend who lived an hour away XD i only got home so late because he didn't drive and i had to drive an hour out to pick him up, an hour back to town, we'd go to a movie or play pool or something and then an hour to drive him home and an hour back XD
