i walked 2 miles to get there in the middle of the early afternoon
i should have been in bed because i'm a night creature but this was the only time i could do it
it was very hot out
the line was so long they made half of us wait OUTSIDE instead of just letting the line curl around or letting people wait in the vestibule ffs
i also didn't realize i didn't have to retake the test to get a permit renewal so i studied FOR NOTHING smfh
and this cost me 20 freaking dollars
i'm just gonna get my real license in the next couple of weeks so i feel like this was basically a waste of time, money, and bodily fluids... but with my family being so unhelpful i have no idea how long it'll be before i can actually get my license since you have to have another driver in the damn car, SO I DID IT ANYWAY.

then i stopped at the walmart vending machine and tried to get a bottle of water and it took my 50 cents but gave me nothing. i told one of the employees and she just nodded and said "ok" and left me with no 50 cents and no water like some kind of bitch in a green vest would do.

so by the time i got home i was ridiculously tired and thirsty BUT HEY I DID IT I DID THE THING AND IT ONLY TOOK ME 2 AND A HALF HOURS lololol

but who doesn't love the good ol' dmv? at least the lady there was really friendly, which is a huge step up from previous experiences. also my picture came out halfway decent for once. yayy.

I've never had an outright PROBLEM with the DMV, just very long wait lines. I did have some frustration one time with the DMV back in my hometown. I got through the line only to discover that there was a document I needed that I didn't bring with me, so I went home to get it, then came back. After I got through the line again, there was a banking problem so I had to drive back to my local bank branch to get things taken care of, then drive back to the DMV and wait in line AGAIN.

Exhausting.

I can honestly say that I have never had a DMV problem yet. I do need to renew my license, but I have cash ready for that and have scheduled an appointment, so I shouldn't have to wait in line.

California has online license renewal. It's nice. :P Still gotta go into the DMV for the initial license and to handle things like registration, but if you already have a California driver's license and no noteworthy change of status, you can do the renewal online.

I renewed my license almost two years ago. I live in the county seat, so I just had to go downtown, pay... I don't remember how much, but it probably wasn't more than $25, and get my picture taken. I tend to have a bit of a smirk even when I'm trying to keep my expression neutral, so I've got my picture with me wearing RED lipstick and a slight smirk. I actually like it, but it's out of date in terms of how my hair is... lol

I just don't like waiting in line for at least an hour to renew my registration haha

We do not have a "DMV" that you speak of, though I hear of such things. I'm currently still processing that you can get a license renewal for $25 and bottled water for 50 cents.

dude the lines basically ARE the DMV. lines, papers, bureaucracy, more lines, more waiting after you finish waiting in the line, BEING PUT ON HOLD FOR AN HOUR BY AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM AFTER SPENDING OVER 10 MINUTES JUST GOING THROUGH MENU OPTIONS it took me like 3 tries of calling to make a license appointment to make me just give up and say "forget it, i'll just renew the permit for now".
and the worst part is...
they're only open at the most inconvenient possible time. you can't CALL THEM on weekends at all even though the actual office is open on Saturdays and you can go into the building. what sense does that make? and of course, saturdays they're only open for like 2 hours in the early morning.
and apparently they close for like 3 or 4 days in a row around easter weekend. and the only way of knowing they're closed is to go there and see a sign on the door. the website/google thing will just say it's open. you'd think "ok easter is over" BUT NO
dmv is trashgarbage experience tbh trash/10 would not recommend

All the times that I have been to the dmv, it hasn't been that busy. I must have been lucky or something.

it's always busy when i go, but this is the first time it was so busy that i've had to stand in line outside. i got sunburn on my face :^(

Canada is pricey. Bottled water in a vending machine is $1.50 at best. Although there are fountains here and there, often outside washrooms.

In my province we go through ICBC, government insurance and driver's stuff. Show up, say why you are there, take the number for the appropriate line, (driver's tests, license renewal, etc.) sit and wait. Costs depend on what you are doing, which test, and what renewal (graduated silencing program.)

note to self: no canada ever in my house.

I've never found the trip to be particularly arduous. I just call ahead and as when during the day the place is likely to be less busy.

Wait, where CAN you find bottled water for $0.50? I've not seen it for less than $1.00 in several years.
