Wikipedia says that medium grain sand grain typically has a diameter of 0.5mm = 0.05cm. Let's ballpark and say they are cubes, so each grain has a volume of 1.25E-4 cubic centimeters. So, there are about 400,000 grains of sand in a handful. This answer would be very different or fine or course grain sand.
