So — what’s the earliest we can guess without annoying everyone else?

I'd personally never get annoyed if someone guesses "early". I'd imagine part of the appeal is to guess with as few letters as possible.

Witchylde runs up and cuts the noose off the Hatter shooing him away after revealing the answer to the riddle. The executioner sighs handing over the death warrant to them and clearing off the podium til the next man shows up.

I also wouldn't hate it if others purposefully mess up so that we can punish the prisoners.
