Confirmation bias. As far as I can tell, those prompts have very, very little impact on the suggestions the site makes, and your view history combined with other people's view history is responsible for basically everything. So since they don't go away, but you already realize you don't want to see it, you notice it more often.
A better way to adjust the suggestions is to open your watch history and remove videos related to the ones you don't want to see.
