that's because rune selling is much more effective if you make your own thread. people flock to it and they're all gone within 10 minutes or so. maybe if you were selling things too, people would come in more.

I think that's because lots of knights visit the brothel, too, but they pay more attention to their knight thread.
I could be totally wrong because the only knights I know are Fallen and Kami. XD
