Because he's AMAZING at playing the Doctor. He has to be one of the best ones, by far.

How long do doctor's usually last?

Well.. Eccleston had one run. David had 4. It all depends on the actors/writers/storyline development, I suppose.

I don't think theres one rhyme or reason when it comes to Who.
