It means literally 'god out of the machine" Its usually referred to when an author needs a way out for their characters because they put them in an inescapable situation so they invent a random plot device and save the character. Its usually a very sucky thing to do, especially when you can't logically get your characters out of a situation you put them in. Shakespeare did it all the time. Like in Hamlet. Hamlet was going off to England to be beheaded and with out any more logical reasoning to get him back Shakespeare had pirates attack the ship that he was on and brought him back to Denmark.
